Bradley Manning Held in Solitary Confinement

Quote:

The United Nations office for torture issues in Geneva is now investigating a complaint that the U.S.is torturing Bradley Manning. Manning is the detained Army private suspected of giving classified documents to WikiLeaks. He has been held in solitary confinement for seven months despite being an exemplary prisoner. Many experts believe that being held in solitary confinement for an extended period of time does constitute torture. The U.N. said it received a complaint from one of Manning’s supporters alleging conditions at the brig amount to torture. According to the U.N., the complaint received alleges that Manning’s physical and mental health are deteriorating in the face of continual solitary confinement. The office of Manfred Nowak, special lawyer on torture based in Geneva, confirmed that they are investigating the report. A spokesman for the Marines denied mistreating Manning, telling the AP he is being kept safe, secure and ready for trial.

I can't help but think that this guy is safer in solitary.

This guy is an Army trooper being held for a General Court Martial in a Marine Brig? Yeah, I'd say he is safer in solitary. This guy is being held for what amounts to treason. Marines would take a dim view of this. I am curious as to why he is held in a Marine Brig rather than an Army Stockade. If found guilty he will be headed to the USDB at Fort Leavenworth which is a Federal Prison administered as the US Disciplinary Barracks for members of the Forces.

As a lawyer I have a degree of unease regarding all of this.

As a soldier I am appalled by his alleged actions.

While I generally oppose capital punnishment I am ambivalent about treason. Having been in the line of fire in defense of my country I have a very dim view of those who would betray her.

I am trying to keep an objective view until the court martial sees the evidence but if he is found guilty...

YEP

Things I've read about Manning

A. Was never able to "get along" with classmates/coworkers/soldiers/superiors
B. Is homosexual
C. A large percent of military personnel see him as a traitor and hate him

ETA- Why the hell does the UN care about solitary confinement and why now? Solitary confinement isn't new, why don't they investigate on behalf of ALL prisoners held in solitary confinement?
