Miami (OH): Phi Gamma Delta "Suspended" for Six Months (Alcohol, Underage)
See the report on a newspaper's site:
http://www.middletownjournal.com/new...y-1031023.html Excerpts: By Meagan Engle, Staff Writer Updated 12:46 PM Thursday, December 16, 2010 OXFORD — Fiji at Miami University has been suspended for six months for having an off-campus party where police were called for underage drinking. . . . The Mu Upsilon chapter of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity will not be recognized by Miami from Dec. 17, 2010, to May 30, 2011, the university announced Dec. 16. The fraternity was originally given a three-year suspension, but the time was reduced after repeated appeals. The chapter was found responsible of violating the student code of conduct for having a disruptive house party at an off-campus residence on Sept. 11, where an underage student became intoxicated. The fraternity appealed their original suspension to the university appeals board . . . . The board upheld the suspension. An appeal was then made . . . to the vice president for student affairs, who lessened the suspension as long as the chapter does not violate any rules during the next three years. They cannot hold any events with alcohol during the next three years, but can petition to have that restriction lifted as soon as Jan. 1, 2012. Among other sanctions, the chapter must get written approval for all social events during the three years. . . . Miami will be working with the Phi Gamma Delta’s national organization to examine the culture, standards and recruiting practices of the chapter. The national director of the fraternity could not immediately be reached for comment. . . . Comment: The article also mentions some of the other fairly recent suspensions, sanctions, and so forth at Miami. Most or all of those have already been noted on GC. |

Sheesh. This is definitely not just a run of bad luck for Miami. They're doing something wrong.

Or it could be that it's a campus thing, not a Greek thing, but the Greeks are easiest to find and discipline.
|
It's not really talked about much, but Miami has a pretty substantial party school reputation. It's right up there with OU and OSU. It's more of a campus things, in my opinion.

They actually did replace their Greek advisor. I graduated from Miami University, and I can tell you, I do not think this is a systemic problem. I think they're having some bad luck. When I graduated (not that long ago), most chapters would not participate in the type of behavior that is occurring. I don't know if things have changed drastically in the last few years, but it's not a university wide norm.
