Texas Tech Rush. Help!
 

Hello all!

Im new to this site as a member, I finally decided to join because everyone seems so helpful and friendly and I know you ladies could give me some helpful advice. So, here is my dillema.

I am transfering to Texas Tech for fall of 2011. I am 22 years old and will be at the time of rush. I have read everything I possibly could on the greek life website for Tech, Ive googled just about everything I could find, and read this website front and back. I obviously know I am going to need recs from just about every sorority because of my age, and I dont want my age to be a factor. I will have a sophmore standing. Joining a sorority has always been something Ive wanted to be a part of. I love the idea of a sisterhood while helping in the community. I volunteer here in Dallas as much as I can with Big brothers big sisters, the SPCA, and Habitat for humanity. I feel it would be a huge part of my college experience and my question for you is if anyone is remotely familiar with the Texas Tech recruitment process, what are some helpful hints, tips, ideas..etc.

Also, what is the best way to get recs in the Dallas area if anyone is familiar?

Whether you "want" your age to be a factor does not matter. It will be a factor at Tech but there is nothing you can do about it. You can't change your age, so just concentrate on the things you can control like your grades, appearance, resume and social skills. Tech isn't as competitive as UT, but it is still a very competitive recruitment.

You're not going to need recs "because of your age" or to "just about" every sorority. In order to maximize her chances of receiving a bid, every PNM at Tech needs recs to every sorority. It's a competitive Texas rush and that's the way we do things here.

If you live in Dallas, the best way to get recs is to network with girls you already know who are active in their sororities as well as families, relatives and others you know in the community. Seriously, it would be hard to spit in Dallas without it hitting a sorority woman. They're everywhere. I knew my age was going to be a factor, I would just rather it not be made such a big deal in comparison to my resume and extra cirriculars. What I'm saying is I want to maximize my chances because I have the age factor working against me in a sense. Im going to be in a rush of over 800 18 year olds. Therefore Im asking for helpful ideas..

I think Lady Longhorn said it all. You can't go wrong if you follow her suggestions. If you live the Dallas area but not in Dallas Central, there is an Alumnae Panhellenic for every suburb as well. All, I believe have very informative websites as well.

You don't get to have a say in that. As Lady Longhorn has pointed out and threads I posted for you earlier showed, you need RECS for EVERY sorority no matter what. You need to shine like the top of the Chrysler building just to overcome the age factor, and that means on top of recs to every chapter, because all the 18 year old rushees will have recs to every chapter. You've got to be above and beyond the average 18 year old rushee. Lady Longhorn is the expert for Texas recruitment and has been very helpful.

You will need recs for every sorority at Tech, and your age will be a factor some of the sororities will consider. Are you willing to give up alcohol for an entire semester? I know my sorority has a no drinking policy for new members no matter what their age. If you have any questions about rush, feel free to PM me. Just interested and Lady Longhorn are absolutely right. Please be aware that nearly every Alumnae Panhellenic in Texas
will have an informational forum in the first several months of 2011 for prospective new members / "rushees." The dates for the ones in 2011 aren't on websites yet, as far as I know, but check back on the websites later this year and then in early 2011. I'd suggest going to the one for your area if you possibly can. :

You probably shouldn't publicly admit to hazing your NMs. (Unless, of course, all the initiated sisters - no matter what their age - give up alcohol during the new member period as well.)

See I thought that was considered hazing but wasn't sure.

It's been considered hazing since the 1970s. The fact that the majority of NMs at some schools are underage does NOT make it OK. When you think about it, even mentioning it is kind of incriminating as it implies other underage members DO drink - kind of like Congress saying up and down that there's no such thing as the Mafia and then having a Mafia Task Force.

if something is in the (inter)national sororities procedure (idk if the previously mentioned scenario is), would it still be considered hazing?

That would depend on the policies of the school and the law of the state and any local laws that might apply.
