ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WXYZ) - Thirty-seven women at the Tri-Delta Sorority in Ann Arbor fell ill Saturday night with symptoms of severe food poisoning.

Paramedics and firefighters got the call around 10 p.m. and when they arrived on scene they found dozens of women vomiting. We’re told eight women were taken to the hospital. All were treated and released.

Joe Weinstein, a student who belongs to a nearby fraternity, told Action News it was a scary thing.

"I came out of my house and there was probably like three ambulances and two or three fire engines… I saw groups of girls that are in the sorority that weren’t sick all worried and what not. Some of the senior girls that live by us were sick too," Weinstein said.

It’s not clear what caused the outbreak, but firefighters believe most if not all of the sisters who became sick ate together on Friday night at the Delta Delta Delta sorority house.

Captain Jim Budd of the Ann Arbor Fire Department says never in his 20 years on the job has he seen a situation like the one Saturday night. All of the girls were treated and are expected to be alright.

The Washtenaw County Health Department is launching their own investigation into the incident and the kitchen at the girls' house.
Ugh poor girls. I'm really curious what they ate. If it was the house mom? Or if they went out to eat? The health department isn't really saying anything. Could be norovirus but there are other girls in the house who aren't sick.

Wow! That's crazy for something like that to happen! They must have had something crazy for dinner that night.

Drolefille 10-25-2010 05:07 PM

Doesn't have to be something crazy, a dented can, unwashed hands, undercooked eggs or meat. And they got unlucky.

The health dept. probably doesn't know anything for sure yet.

Wow, if they went out to dinner somewhere, I'd sure like to know where they went, since I live in the Ann Arbor area. Poor girls, I sure hope they feel better :(

That sucks. Glad they're all ok, but I'm willing to bet that was a ranking unpleasant experience.

That and about a thousand other things. I have my ServSafe (food safety) certification & that semester I hardly ever went to any restaurants. You do not want to think about what could be happening in those kitchens and still pass inspections.

This is a terrible situation for these girls. One bad incident can ruin an entire restaurant or company.

They say it's norovirus, but I'm still curious if they ate in the house or elsewhere. Probably in the house since no one else got it.

U-M Sorority Members Fall Violently Ill

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - An investigation is underway after dozens of members of a sorority at the University of Michigan became violently ill. Some of the young women were so sick they had to be hospitalized. Health officials believe the culprit behind the illnesses may be something they all ate.

"Usually kind of hits you like a freight train," said Kristen Schweighoefer with the Washtenaw County Health Department.

The cleanup is already beginning after more than 30 members of the University of Michigan's chapter of Delta Delta Delta sorority became violently ill, sick with a virus, and you can imagine these women aren't the only ones concerned.

Health inspectors have been combing through the sorority house and conducting their own investigation, and now they're pretty sure they know what made these women so sick.

"Norovirus is sometimes mistakenly called stomach flu, and it's really the sudden onset and often violent onset of vomiting and diarrhea," Schweighoefer said.

The virus usually comes from contaminated food and spreads pretty quickly.

"Someone didn't wash their hands or was sick and preparing food, and that's how the food got contaminated," said Schweighoefer.

Officials still are not sure whether those who got sick contracted the virus inside the sorority house, but they do know they were most likely exposed to the virus last Thursday or Friday.

Everyone who became ill is expected to be just fine, but health officials say this outbreak can serve as a reminder for all of us.

"Stay home if you're sick and wash your hands to prevent spreading the illness to others," Schweighoefer said.

Members of the sorority are not saying much, but we do know they are taking precautions to make sure this doesn't happen again.

The University of Michigan says the virus has not been found anywhere else on campus and that the problem is isolated

I was just coming here to post this. I feel so badly for those girls.

I hope they're all well, but all I can think of is the scene in Drop Dead Gorgeous where they all barf in the tropical courtyard after eating bad shellfish.

LucyKKG 10-26-2010 02:15 AM

Ughhh that's awful. Food poisoning is the WORST!

I would hope not...I'm sure that Nationals would be displeased with having to address an issue of cannibalism.... ;)
