DKE hazing Allegations UofA

http://thegatewayonline.ca/articles/...dke-fraternity and http://www.edmontonsun.com/news/edmo.../15776286.html

I was a sorority member at the UofA, and I am shocked by these allegations.

:eek::eek::eek:

This is AWFUL!!!!! Not only are they mentally and physically obliterating their brothers, they're putting Greek life into an even more precarious situation in Canada. I don't even know what to say.

Kevin - can you please change the title of this thread to reflect the school? There are many "U of A"s out there.

Preston327 10-21-2010 11:31 PM

That is, by far, the worst hazing I've ever heard of. I'm honestly surprised they haven't killed anyone yet by doing all that.

ebdelt 10-21-2010 11:36 PM

Yeah...at first I thought this was for University of Alabama, where DKE is a very prominent and historic chapter. Thread title is a little misleading. That being said, these reports are shocking, disgusting, and god awful.

DeltaBetaBaby 10-21-2010 11:43 PM

Let's not pretend we are all so shocked. We all know that this stuff goes on all over the place.

I'm pretty shocked. I am not naive enough to think there isn't a ton of hazing going on out there, but I think of it as mild hazing for the most part (making them clean/fix the fraternity house, wear something stupid to class, be DDs during pledgeship, etc.) and not stuff making pledges eat their own vomit.

Fair. This is pretty extreme, if it's all happening as described by the anonymous sources.

Me too.

And just as a different perspective, everything's usually on a smaller scale in Canada in terms of Greek life. The hazing that I've heard of is making people listen to the same song for hours on end, clean a house, etc. The rare occasion that I've heard of this level has usually been for a hockey team. This is a horrible situation, and I wonder how it's going to be handled.

Update Oct.28, 2010: DKE Suspended as Student Group

http://thegatewayonline.ca/articles/...-u-dke-chapter

Excerpts from article:

The Delta Kappa Epsilon (DKE) fraternity chapter at the University of Alberta had its status as a student group suspended Thursday afternoon following allegations of hazing made in a Gateway article published October 21.

Dean of Students Frank Robinson stated . . . that the suspension is effective immediately and would last until further notice. He added that it is being implemented because of a concern for the well-being of students.

“I’ve taken this action under the Code of Student Behaviour, which empowers me, as Dean, with the authority to immediately suspend a student group if I reasonably believe that the group’s activities have endangered or could potentially endanger the health, safety, and well-being of students,” Robinson said. . . .

“Typically, [the suspension] will last until the end of the investigation, but there is an appeal process, so the fraternity could appeal,” he added.

The suspension of DKE’s student group status means that they lose the privileges that come with student group registration, which includes the ability to book space at the university, rent university equipment, or use the university name and insignia. This suspension has no impact on individuals within the fraternity.

Robinson would not comment on the details of the investigation or speculate on the eventual result . . . .

Robinson said that, to his knowledge, the last time a student group was suspended was about 10 years ago.

DKE International could not be reached for comment, but stated last week in a press release that they will be conducting their own internal investigation.

Update Dec. 10, 2010: DKE HQ Puts Alberta Chapter on 3-Year Provisional Suspension with More Alumni Oversight and Guidance

Deke HQ has placed the U of Alberta chapter on provisional suspension for three years, according to:

http://www.edmontonsun.com/news/edmo.../16504931.html

Excerpts from ^:
A University of Alberta fraternity at the centre of a hazing controversy has been slapped with a "provisional suspension" by its international governing body.

During the three-year suspension, the local Delta Kappa Epsilon chapter will be under the microscope of a newly appointed alumni council, the fraternity's international board of directors said in a statement Friday.

"That alumni council will monitor all aspects of the chapter's operations, and provide direction, advice and guidance," says the statement. . . .

As part of the provisional suspension, one member of the alumni council will attend a chapter meeting at least once a month.

Alumni members will also be involved in the planning of major social events to make sure behaviour guidelines are being followed, says the fraternity.
As well, "a revised pledge program and initiation ceremony that fully and veritably complies with written (fraternity) standards will be prescribed and then monitored," says the release. . . .

They knew about it and won't do anything

As a former employee, I called this to the attention of the board several times that the Canadian Chapters were hazing heavily. A Canadian Judge on the Board went into a rant and my career ended. These sanctions are meaningless.
