Recruitment at a school with a fledgling Greek Life?

Hello there,

I'm wondering if anyone has been through a recruitment at a school with a fledgling Greek Life (started less than a decade ago) with fewer than 5 sororities and 10 GLOs altogether? I've been to a couple of recruitment parties with a ratio of 2 or 3 sorority members to 1 PNM. There was an average of 3 PNMs (including myself) at each party - what is the likelihood of getting a bid in this situation (this was Fall Recruitment, I intend to rush in the Spring).

Warmly,
Jessica

P.S. No, I wasn't aware of the anonymity advice when I registered. Otherwise, I would have gone with a different username.

There is no way that someone can tell you whether or not you'll get a bid, or how likely you would be to get one.

I an tell you that the size of a Greek system and/or the number of PNMs present at a party have nothing to do with how likely someone is to get a bid.

That is up to the chapter.

Even if there are only 3 PNMs at a party, the chapter doesn't have to extend any of them a bid if they don't wish to.

Cool, thanks for sharing that - I kinda thought that might be the case.

It could be a really great way for you to become involved if the chapters are small and relatively new. It's what you make of it, but of course, see how recruitment goes first. ;)

I feel compelled to warn* you, based only on the fact that I recall you from your previous threads, that many GLOs have Christian based rituals. I recall this being an issue for you and while belief is rarely if ever necessary, respect is. If that's not going to be possible for you - in part because of the intolerance you've experienced - I would really think hard about whether this is a good idea or not.

*warn, inform, alert, scare away? I'm not sure what the right word is, but there you go.

Of course. I shall go into recruitment with no expectations and let what happens happen. In other words, rush like a Buddhist. :p

I think it's possible, I've had a breakthrough in my recovery recently. ^_^

This is the point where I come across as stalking, but again this was based on our previous conversation. You posted on your blog (using the same username) less than a month ago about how Christians shouldn't be allowed to get graduate educations. But it was ok for them to enter fields of work where they wouldn't be required to use critical thinking.

And then, well within your rights, refused to backdown from your statements following a backlash.

You're entitled to your beliefs, but I cannot help but feel you're being dishonest about your change in beliefs and perhaps disingenuous about your attempts to join a sorority.

Jessica, if you've had a change of heart and maybe realized you said some things that were unnecessarily harsh, it may be a good time for you to start fresh with a new, more anonymous user name here. No need to continue to rehash it if it's past history.

But do realize that Drole is right; virtually every sorority has some element of religion in it. You don't have to be brought to tears over the lords prayer, but you better be prepared to participate or at least stand there politely or you're going to have LOADS of trouble.

As an atheist (and as someone who did no research about greek life before joining), I was a little nervous when I realized a huge portion of my group's ritual is from the bible. In the end, I compromised by reciting the parts that had no overtly religious overtones (no "Christ", "God", "savior," "Him", "pray," "trust," etc) and stood silently through the rest. No one in the chapter had any issue with this, and I bet most members never noticed.

If you're that outspoken against religion/Christians (or, really, if you're outspoken/intolerant of ANY group of people) then a sorority might not be the best place for you, as there will probably be a mix of race, religion, upbringing, wealth, major, etc in your sorority.

Wow. Just read the blog. Honestly you need to think if sorority life is right for you. For one thing, there is the religious element. However even if you happen to join a sorority with absolutely no religious elements in the ritual, well you still have other things to worry about. You are more then likely going to have Christian, Jewish or Muslim sisters. And judging from the posts I have read, well quite frankly you seem to be the one throwing stones in glass houses.

This thread is making me uncomfortable in terms of what people think is in different rituals, even though I guess it is general knowledge that religious elements could be included.

You're doing the same thing to Christians and Islamic people that you accuse others of doing to you.

You don't have to agree with their belief systems, but you have a responsibility to respect them.

You claim to follow buddhist teachings. Did you forget this one: "Life is dear to all beings. They have the right to live the same as we do." ?

Saw the blog, very interesting.

Xylochick216 10-12-2010 06:55 PM

You also mention on the blog that you are married, which could be another obstacle to overcome.

DrPhil 10-12-2010 06:56 PM

With all due politeness and respect, this all has to be a joke.
