Transfer Issues

Hey guys.
I currently got to school in the north. Next fall I will attend the University of Missouri- Columba (Mizzou). I am a member of Kappa Delta sorority which MU also has...when I transfer what will happen to my sorority status? Does anyone know or had a similar experiance?

You should ask an adviser, but for most sororities, the process is to petition for affiliation if you would like to remain active at the new campus or to remain alum and not attempt to affiliate. If it were me I would send a letter introducing myself to the new chapter and ask to meet some of the members. See if you're a good fit, and then decide whether or not to try to affiliate.

It's always best to find the written-down procedure, though, that is specific to your sorority. (Many sororities have such things online in their members only section of the national website). That way, you're 100% sure of the process and the steps you need to take.

How early do you think I start contacting people about this?

I would recommend asking one of your advisers. Chances are they know someone who has transferred before or have dealt with the affiliation process.

How is it that people don't know who to contact about this kind of thing? Not even asking to be snarky.

I'd think I'd have asked at my previous chapter unless I didn't know where I was going to be transferring to and whether they had a chapter of my org there.

But, GC's proven that there are some pretty insular chapters that maybe don't educate well on how to communicate with other chapters or HQs.

I did laugh a bit at the contrast of "the north" with "Columbia, MO." Of the parts of Missouri that consider themselves southern, I've never seen Columbia in that mold.

When this question is asked, I often wonder if there's a hesitation about letting the current chapter know about the planned transfer.

We were always told ask the officers and if they don't know ask the advisers and if they don't know ask the province director and if they don't know...you get the picture. There's a chain of command for a reason. I just told her to ask her advisers since I'm assuming this isn't something officers would be 100% clear on unless she is in a large chapter with regular transfers. It would have done no good at my chapter and I would have gone to the advisers.

If you aren't already admitted to Mizzou for next fall, I'd wait until that was finalized, honestly.
