Gunman Opens Fire at the University of Texas, Kills Self
 

A gunman reportedly shot and killed himself after opening fire at the University of Texas at Austin this morning.

The Austin American-Statesman reported that Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo confirmed that the shooter is dead from what appears to be self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A university text message warning students to stay inside and stay put said the gunman was last seen at the Perry Castaneda library.

A university spokeswoman told the Statesman that police had contained the suspect at the main library on campus.

"Now I'm told by campus security that the individual has shot himself on the sixth" floor, spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon said, "but I'm not there yet so I can't confirm that."

Campus closed.




The text message system is part of a full warning system that UT started rolling out Pre-Virginia Tech. All TVs on campus are also wired so emergency message screens can be displayed on them and there's a system in place to shut down parts of the campus.

I work for a company not related to the UT campus but we are blocks away (25th and Lamar for any who are familiar with the campus.) The campus is at a complete lockdown. The area is covered with helicopters and the main roads are closed.
Allegedly there is a seond shooter. My company locked our front doors.

I wanted something exciting to happen at work but not this.

Such a scary world we live in! I couldn't bare the thought of having a child away at school somewhere, and having to wake up to hear news like this. Let's pray there are no other fatalities.

My daughter was thankfully still in her apartment in west campus when this happened. She and her friends, including all her KD sisters are ok. One Kappa Delta sister was in the PCL when the shooting started. She too is safe.

Just an fyi, the campus has been reopened.

Jen - the shooting was VERY near the Alpha Phi house (and the KKG house) so that is pertinent information. They are both right next to each other and right around the corner from the library. Many prayers were answered that nobody (aside from the shooter) was injured. Very scary for all.

Daughter works there some days; she wasn't there today and is fine.

Reportedly, however, it took an hour from the first shot to the lockdown notice. Can anyone here confirm or deny?

The text messages went out to the students within about 10 minutes of the shots being fired. Shots were fired just after 8am and the text went out at 8:22am.

Before I even saw it on the news, I got an email from one of my cousins that his DD was at home. She had gone home last night for a (horse) riding lesson. Haven't heard from my other cousin as to where his DD was at the time of the shootings.

I just checked Facebook, my friend was in Houston at the time so she's okay! Good lord, this is a scary, scary world.....
