Differences between NIC and NPC?
I'm looking at a few frats, but mostly at Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sigma Lambda Beta, so I was wondering if there was any main differences between the two councils.
Thanks! |
Uh... one is for men and one is for women?
|
I don't think that NPC means what you think it means.
|
No no. SLB is a latino based, multicultural frat and SAE is in a pan-hellenic council like all of the other main ones.
|
First, they're not "frats." Generally among the NIC groups the word "frat" is derogatory.
Second, both Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Sigma Lambda Beta are both members of the NIC. Third, the NPC is the governing body for women's sororities and fraternities. |

Calm down there, turbo. No one is attacking anyone. lol.
I'll take your word for the stigma of the word, "frat", but in the time I've spent around fraternities, I hear brothers say "frat" way more often than "fraternity". Either way, my bad. I'll keep that in mind. ^_^ Also, I'm still new to the whole thing, so forgive my misinterpretation. I didn't know they were in the same council. I remember hearing that SAE and SLB don't really ever participate in the same events on campus, so I assumed. Thanks for clearing that up! |
So it sounds like you're asking what the differences are between fraternities like SAE and fraternities like SLB?
Although I could hazard an answer, I think you probably already know what those differences are just by looking at how they operate on your campus. I would also say that I've never met anyone who was debating on which kind of fraternity to join. Either you want the experience of a general fraternity like SAE or you want the experience based in one or many cultures, like Alpha, SLB, or other fraternities like them, be they NPHC, NMGC, or independent. I think it's cool that you're looking into both. |

The acronyms can get confusing. You'll get the hang of it. :) |
SLB and SAE are both members of the North American Interfaternal Council, which is a just a generic umbrella organization for men's fraternal organizations. What you probably meant was NPHC which is the National Pan-Hellenic Conference which is an umbrella orginzation made up of currently 9 historically African American fraternal orginzations, both male and female. SLB is not a member of that Conference, though it is a member of the NALFO or National Association of Latino Fratenal Orginzations, which as the name suggest is made up of fraternal orginzations focused on Latino culture, while NIC in general does not have any cultural focus, though the none NALFO or NPHC members of NIC tend to be historically white.
|
How did NPHC get thrown into this?
OP -- as a few people stated earlier, you're probably confusing NPC with NALFO. |
