Arrested for Defending His Daughter?

Wait...you don't bully kids??? First...why do these kids have CONDOMS and why are they messing with a handicap kid?

These are children. You can't pretend to teach children how to control themselves when you're an adult who can't control yourself. No adult is going to threaten to kick my child's ass. Period. We have adult protocol for a reason and from all accounts he ignored going through the proper channels and handled it the "hood way."

I commend him for being proactive and sticking up for his daughter. His daughter has cerebral palsy and is in the hospital on suicide watch. God bless parents who take a stand. But, even HE acknowledges when interviewed that he was angry as hell and went too far.

I totally read that as "defriending his daughter" and I was like "why would someone be arrested for that?"

Some kids parents don't care if their kid is the bully and it wouldn't matter if the father had gone through the proper steps.

My nephew is really small for his age. Last year when he was in kindergarten, an older kid was bullying him. No one stuck up for him so he pushed the kid and unfortunately the kid fell down the stairs... uninjured thank God. It's wrong, very wrong, but I'm proud that he stuck up for himself. He's going to be going through this his whole life most likely so he needs to learn because there are kids out there who will never be taught respect. I wish I would have socked any of my bullies growing up. Maybe I wouldn't have gotten walked all over by "friends" all my life. I coulda just threatened to beat them up! :)

The report said he contacted the school, and the school did nothing.

He didn't utilize all of the adult protocol/proper channels that parents have access to. As one of the women said in the video, he could've stormed into the school's office if he wanted to storm into something. He could've talked to the bus driver and, instead of confronting some CHILDREN like he's going to fight them, he could've told the bus driver that he will not allow the bus to drive away until the bus driver talks to the kids. Is there a school board?

People want quick and easy solutions. Life is not quick and easy. More importantly, how you deliver the message is often more important than the message. He could've been assertive without going that far.

When your child is being threatened, action needs to be taken NOW. Not going to a once-a-month school board meeting, hoping to be put on the agenda.

Whatever. His NOW action failed miserably.

I'm very surprised that so many people justify this. But then again, people who are only responsible for their own children don't usually understand the perspectives of those of us who are responsible for hundreds of children.

We had a very similar situation with a mother at my school last year. The first thing we had to say was, "Ms. ___, don't EVER threaten any of our kids again." I can just imagine how this parent would have reacted if some adult had gotten into her child's face the way she got into this one's face. Kids do and say mean things every day-- do you really think its okay to open the door for parents who want to confront other people's kids in their rage? Especially without any other parents or admins around? This is serious naivete.

As a child I was bullied constantly. As soon as my parents pick me up from after school care I would immediately tell them what happened that day (as I had told my teachers, who did nothing, and the after school care workers, who again did nothing). My parents complained to administration and my teachers multiple times. Nothing was ever done.

On this respect I completely understand why this father "lost it". Should he have done what he did? No. Did he feel he had no other options? Most likely, yes.

I'm sorry there is absolutely no reason for administration and teachers not to take this father's complainants seriously, from the sounds of it they didn't.

But parents are the same as they were when I was a kid, they do not want to accept that their child is a bully (now I am speaking generally and from my experience dealing with parents as a teacher). I have talked to parents about their child being a bully, they will actually blame the child their kid is bullying! I can't make that parent see that their child is a bully but I have done my part as the teacher by defending my students. I don't tolerate bullying.

I agree with this. He crossed the line, even if I can understand why he did it. He shouldn't have done it, even for the 'best' reasons.

Here's a good reason why states should be passing and enforcing anti-bullying laws. This guy apparently had exhausted his remedies within the system. Such a law would let him march down to the police station, make a report, then we'd be talking about criminal liability.

At any rate, he should have/could have lawyered up. For whatever reason, high school administrators live in fear of lawyers.
