Important: Facebook Scam targeting new members

As an international volunteer, I was notified about a Facebook scam that is targeting new members. NPC alerted all of the NPC sororities and I'm sure the word will trickle down but I thought with all the new members and potential new members who come here looking help/advice/information, this board would be a way to alert them as well. Here is a portion of the email that I received:

"Someone(s) is creating fake Facebook accounts which they are using to contact new members in the Panhellenic community. They begin by saying that they are an alumna of the chapter and that contact with new members is part of the (initiation) process. The individual posing as an alumna member sent friend invites to a significant number of new members asking for personal information, including cell phone numbers, class schedules, dorm room numbers and what time they would be arriving home. The individual indicated that having an alumna mentor to help train them online was part of the pledging process and that a new member "had to earn" her "way to become" a member. The new members were asked what they knew about "hazing" and if they had a webcam. The new members were told to keep the "chat confidential" if they wanted to be a "loyal and strong" member.
In the cases that have been confirmed so far, campus police and student affairs professionals are involved."

The letter also noted that so far, it is known that some schools in Florida and Texas have been targeted and it has been reported by more than one group.

When they're getting home?

That is downright scary.

Super creepy!!

That is creepy and scary. I really hope that a naive new member concerned with "doing the right thing" doesn't give anyone her information. Something really bad can come out of this. I pray it doesn't.

I got this email as well (we were actually alerted by ZTA HQ regarding it).

So creepy.

That is very creepy.

Anyone can claim to be anyone on the 'net:

But the young women being targeted have grown up with the Internet as part of their daily lives, so I imagine most of them are smart enough to know this, and I imagine most new member educators will be giving their NM classes a heads up.

Apparently a similar thing is going on Sigma now. I'm hearing that folks are posing as alumnae, sending NMs FB messages asking for personal info (i.e. SSNs, bank account type things, photos, etc).

Just saw in the paper this morning that a man was arrested in Key West for this scam.

Hopefully, they can get him on all counts. I think the LSU police were the ones making the arrest with Florida not far behind.
