Choosing a Sorority

Hey,
My name is allie, i will be attending IUP in the fall, im actually leaving for school this saturday. this will be my first year, and in my second semester im planning on rushing.. ive been doing some reseacrh on the differant sororities and their philanthropies, trying to figure out whats best for me. it would be cool if i heard a little bit from each sorority to sort of narrow it down. thanks :)

If you're referring to NPC sororities, that's not how they operate. Read some of the threads in the 'sorority recruitment' forum.

If you're referring to other types of sororities, you need to find that information through a little more research :)

Good luck.

Sorority rush/recruitment is a mutual selection process. You don't just decide which sorority to join, the sorority also decides if it wants you as a member.

All chapters of national sororities are different so even if someone from each sorority represented at IUP replied to this post, it wouldn't do you any good. Even the chapters within PA are all EXTREMELY different from school to school.

Some advice: don't go crazy partying (alcohol wise or boy wise), don't listen to reputations and rumors, and be VERY VERY careful what you say and do online (including this site). IUP (and western PA in general) is a teeny tiny place. Good luck!

i understand the sorority has to pick you as well, what i was refering to was "narrowing down" my choices of which i want to rush for. i still need to do a lot more research

If you go through Formal Recruitment, you rush all of the NPC sororities on your campus. Generally after each round, you make a list of your favorites (and sometimes in order) and the sororities do the same until bid day. We can't give you specifics about each sorority because A. we don't go to your school, and B. you need to figure out what's important to you in a sorority. You may love a sorority that someone else isn't too crazy about. What other people think DOES NOT MATTER.

You may only receive one bid at the end of recruitment, but not everyone receives a bid. As 33 said, read the recruitment threads and use the search function here for more info. Good luck!

Be smart and don't rule out groups before you even meet them. You can't find out who you like or click with through online research. (That includes gossip sites.) I'm not sure how structured their spring rush is but even if you don't HAVE to visit all the sororities in person at least once, it really is in your best interest to do so.

Again: DON'T narrow your choices on the basis of a website or campus gossip. MEET THE GROUPS PERSONALLY.

To all reading: IUP has deferred rush - you need to have 12 college credits.

Lane swerve:

I just want to make sure the OP understands that "may only" in this sentence means "can only," not "might only" (with the implication that the OP might only receive one bid but also might receive more than one bid).

/back to my lane.

Then do it. You don't need us to do that.

Worth the emphasis. I am forever amazed by the number of people on GC who either went to school in PA or are from PA; same with other pockets of the country.
