Death While At College
it is only my second semester away at school... everyone knows how hard it can be being so far away from home. anyway, have any of you ever had to deal with a death while so far from your family and friends? have you ever had to know that someone you love is gone forever and there is no one around who you can hug who is feeling the same pain that you are? i just got home and i had an urgent message from my parents...my grandma died. even thought I have some close bonds here at school I just want to go home.

Oh, Josh. I am so sad for you. It's truly rough to be far away at times like that.
Please take time to grieve all that you can now. I find that physical activity helps too--go out and run, play racquetball, exert yourself. Stay in touch with your family. And most of all--since you can't go home, depend on your brothers for support. They'll be there for you. |
My heart and prayers go out to you. I loved my grandparents like a second mother and father. It's so hard when you can't be home and draw some emotional strenghth from those you love and who love you. Carnation's advice is from the heart and as good as it gets. I am so sorry.

Josh please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I know exactly what it feels like to lose someone you love while away at college. I lost both of my grandfathers in a year's time. I lost my dad's dad right before Thanksgiving my freshman year and my mom's dad right after finals last fall. I don't live that far away from my immediate family (mom and dad) but the rest of my family lives clear across the state. It was tough having to learn after the fact that my dad's dad had passed away. I also felt guilty for a long long time knowing that because of school and sorority activities I had missed spending their last days with them. This was truly the case with my mom's dad. Last fall it always seemed as if something would come up and I couldn't go to visit him. I have to agree with what carnation said. Take the time to grieve. It's ok to cry...you just lost someone you really love. Definitely draw on the support of your brothers and friends there at school. You never know...they might be able to give you some advice and help you get through this difficult time. Again...I'm really sorry to hear about your loss. Please know that we're all thinking about you.

My dad died during the fall semester of my sophomore year. My mom told me that the doctors weren't optimistic so I went home for the weekend (I lived only three hours from school). I spent most of the weekend at the hospital. I left to go back to school and he passed away that Sunday evening. So, I turned around and left again. You and your family are in my prayers.
