Active recruitment story

Hello all! I did this last year but I figure I'll do it again, an active member on the 'other side' of recruitment.

This year is the first year we're not keeping our recruitment theme a secret. The other two sororites are convinced that this is a 'fake theme'. It's been pretty funny on our campus. The theme this year is Alice and Wonderland. My setup/breakdown night is the first night, Ice Water night.

This is my third recruitment. We have workshops for the weekend before classes start, then the weekend before recruitment. I'm not really looking foward to those too much since this is my third time giong through. Hopefully they learned some new stuff at convention to teach us.

The only problems are that none of the sisters own a dress that billows out enough to slow them down as they fall, the Caterpillar's Hookah violates both National Sorority and Campus rules on drug paraphenalia and the campus animal rights groups aren't happy with what's being done with either the Flamingos or the Hedgehogs. :) :) :)

Recruitment for the active members start Tuesday. We have chapter tomorrow and then its bye bye FB for the week.

The PNMs have an orientation meeting Monday. I've been told that 250 have signed up. Thats about 50 less than last year. I wonder if its because of the economy, or because panhellenic set the deadline to Friday instead of the usual "the last day to sign up is orientation".

There are 5 nights of recruitment at our school. Our theme this year is "Alice in Wonderland".

Ice Water (Tuesday): Ice water night is the mad hatters tea party. It's going to be pretty cool. I'll give room details the night after.

Philanthropy (Wednesday and Thursday): Our philanthropy is St. Jude.

Sisterhood (Friday): Our theme is tweedle dee and tweedle dumb. Everything is in pairs.

Pref (Saturday): Queen of hearts.

I'm excited since this is my third time going through as an active member so nothing is really that new to me.

Two girls that I know are going through and I am so excited for them.

I didn't get home last night until super late so I couldn't post.

Day one-ice water. I have never been so proud of a decorated room. I let our SG advisor have a sneak peak and she's like "I don't even feel like I'm in the student union anymore". Our room was the tea party so we had three tables with white table cloths and purple runners. On the tables we had tea cups, boxes with cookies that said 'eat me', cupcake holders with cupcakes (no pnms were allowed to eat obviously. we told them it was decoration) and a bunch of other crazy whimsical decorations. The walls were blue with clouds. We had Chinese lanterns hanging from the ceiling and pretty umbrellas. There was a picked fence around the room and huge paper machete trees. We had a huge tree in the middle of the room with lights. It was just beautiful.

The girls I met were pretty good. One girl wouldn't even look at me when I talked to her. And when I asked her questions she just turned away. She was rude to my whole group. I met a girl from RI which was great. Met two girls I REALLY loved. Then I had one girl who when ever I asked her questions answered with "I don't know". They kicked us out of the union at midnight so we barley got time to clean up. Overall the day went pretty well though. After 17 hours of setting up and parties I was ready to sleep.

That is such an awesome theme! It sounds like you all put a lot of thought into it =)
I'm personally really looking forward to hearing about pref~ that theme is my favourite.

Philanthropy rounds are done! We had two rounds of philanthropy with there being 3 parties on each day.

Our theme for philanthrioy was in the pansy garden. We had giant pansys on the wall and St. Jude posters everywhere.

I cry every year at the video but this year was especially tough because I know a 14 year old boy going through chemo right now. He has dermoplastic small cell round tumor which is high aggressive and has a very low survival rate. I'm a star bumper so thank goodness I'm not with a PNM during the video (good news for him he started Chemo today!).

I met a couple good girls. One girl I am in love with. Her dad was a greek life member, her mom was his fraternities sweatheart and her grandmother worked for St. Jude so she has been there. She was so easy to talk to. I hope she gets invited back.

Tonights the first night of cuts. I'm so impressed at how great my chapter is doing this year. Our recruitment team is doing such a good job of not getting down on the chapter and just being so so positive.

Of course I"m disappointed in a few girls. I'm sure every chapter has the ones who complain but I'm trying to ignore it. Yesterday we weren't allowed to leave the room for a half hour and instead of helping clean some girls sat at the door and texted on their phones. I understand their tired, but we all are. The more hands we have helping the faster EVERYONE can go home.

My nose and throat are starting to get sick. EEK!

Jenny- I am high school friends with one of your sisters, and I've seen pictures of the decorations! You all did an amazing job! :)

Ugh I always got irritated when I was helping hang decorations while others were talking to their boyfriend on the phone...I had a boyfriend, too, but this was recruitment!

Look at one of them pointedly and ask if they would mind helping you clean tables or something.
