Formal Recruitment- What to wear?
 

Hey all! I'm going through formal recruitment this fall and SO excited! One question I have is: what to wear? What's a good outfit idea for say, "casual", "semi-formal", etc.? My school is relatively uncompetitive with rush (from my understanding). Any ideas would be so helpful! Thanks lovelies :)

I can't say the dress requirements are the same from year to year (I have no idea), but if you are registered for rush, they will let you know ahead of time what the dress requirements are (normally at the orientation meeting). Of course, being October in Oregon it is always a little weather dependent.

Last year the girls were given recruitment T-shirts that they all wore on the first day. You can dress them up a little with cute earrings or a bracelet.

Day 2 was a school spirit theme, so they are were supposed to wear some type of school shirt with jeans (this is where being Nike U is really helpful because if they do this one again, there are LOADS of options). My daughter wore hers with a nice pair of jeans, some spirit beads and low key gold earrings that matched the gold part of the spirit beads.

Here's where I don't quite remember. I THINK day 3 was philanthropy day. Since it was Saturday, a craft, and in the middle of the day, she said most of the girls wore cute shorts (dressier - not short, short or cut off jean shorts of course) or capris with a slightly dressy shirt (not going out dressy - but not a t-shirt or any old shirt).

I think the next day was house tours (I may have these turned around), and here I am really unsure. I want to say she and most of the girls she saw wore dressy jeans, and a dressy (going out) shirt, but some may have also worn sun dresses. Here again, it was midday and very warm. I know the year before a friend of hers said she went with jeans and a nice shirt with a cute shrug because it was chillier and rainy.

Preference day everyone wore cocktail dresses or dressy sun dresses. No particular color was required.

You walk a lot because the greek houses are SO spread out, so I would recommend a pretty sandle if the weather is good and maybe a nice boot with the jeans if the weather is rainy or cold.

Of course the best thing to do is what KSUViolet06 suggests - ask friends who are in chapters. Also, PM WCsweet<3 - she's really the best person to ask for advice on this.

You may also want to check the recruitment section of your university's website. They usually publish a "what to wear" guide so nobody is totally lost. Some places are much more formal, while others are super laid back. When in doubt, it's better to err on the side of being too dressed up!

Definitely find out what the deal is on YOUR campus...what is essential on one campus might be the kiss of death at another. Your recruitment counselors SHOULD let you know before hand, and most schools' Greek sites have a list of what to wear. But if you're not getting the info you need do not be afraid to ask! Ask your Recruitment Counselor as well as any Greek friends you might have on your campus.

lovely, Unfortunately U of O does not put a "what to wear" guide on their website. It's a great idea, I wish they would, and maybe they will do that this year, who knows, but they haven't in the past. Again, they will give you that information, I believe, at orientation (they MAY have emailed it). Either way, sorority friends or WCsweet - who I think mentioned in your previous thread that she is going to be a recruitment counselor this year - are your best bet.

Note from my daughter's recruitment: If it is "casual" this does NOT mean (if it is hot) cutoffs and flipflops. It would mean a nice sundress and yes, comfortable shoes. "Nice" generally translates into something that you might wear out to a luncheon.

Hemlines are a touchy issue: I know that, from reading GC that hemlines in the south are much lower than here in SoCal. My daughter's hemlines go as far north as they can go for decency's sake. If you have nice legs, and the hemlines work in your area go for it. And if the legs aren't your best feature AND you are in, for example, SoCal...don't.

^I'd say go with the fingertip rule for skirt length. Hands flat on your legs, and the hem should sit below your longest finger. I'd say that would be the shortest you should go even at a school with an extremely liberal dress code... Keep it classy, you know? ;)

Preference Day
 

Hey girls! At my school, both theme day and preference day are supposed to be dressy, but preference more than theme day. Most girls wear sundresses and short heels for theme day, and cocktail dresses with taller heels for preference. Many of my friends are buying new dresses for rush, but I am wondering if I could wear my prom dress from senior year. Would that be too tacky?

where is "around here" for you? (about casual not being a sundress)

Midwest. I attend SLU and our "casual" nights were jean skirts or black pants/capris for the actives. (And flip flops!) Sundresses were fine, they just weren't the minimum standard for "casual." And you could wear a sundress or similar light dress for pref or go slightly dressier. Obviously short shorts and tops that let it all hang out were not ok.
