American Apparel's Complete Guide To Grooming

Now I realize every store/workplace has a dress code - but this is the same place that has overly airbrushed women hanging out of their clothes in all their ads - and they're trying to say they "celebrate natural beauty."

I could never work there because I've got bangs. Darn.

christiangirl 06-21-2010 12:24 AM

One of those women had excessive jewelry. She also had her legs spread open like she was expecting company.

My hair has highlights. I'm out.

They've gotten in a lot of trouble for firing an amputee, and a muslim woman for not meeting their 'look' policy. They try to argue that they're hiring 'models' not 'sales associates' *gag*

I used to work at Abercrombie where the rules were similar, so I'm not shocked by these guidelines. However, at A&F, we WERE hired as models.

It's very interesting to read that memo while watching Handmaid's Tale! Very, very strange.

Right?

AA is not my kind of place. I don't understand why a guy would want to look like a manorexic Steve Urkel.

I've never been able to find anything there that has "fit" me. The clothes are designed to look good on guys that weigh less then 150 LBS. Guys with muscle mass or pudge just look awkward in their clothes.

Exactly! My brother wears the t-shirts, hoodies, and socks, but only the loose fitting t-shirts, and he's only 170lbs. Then again, I don't know anyone who actually wears anything other than the aforementioned items. Really, metallic 70's running shorts that show EVERYTHING? You're going to be THAT guy/girl? I wear the socks and headbands, but nothing else fits properly and/or looks like something I'd imagine would fit into a 70's "adult film". $55 for a plain hoodie that's almost as thin as a t-shirt is highway robbery.

In regards to the dresscode, I know restaurants that hire people as "models" so they can fire you if you don't meet their standards. As for the employees at the AA here, they don't fit into those emails at all. Apparently the Ke$ha-smear-your-face-in-glitter-and-finger-paint makeup trend helps to sell those gold running shorts:rolleyes:

What, you mean people don't wear gold lame hot pants in Canada?

Leave Ke$ha out of it, those shorts have been in AA stores for at least 5 years now :)

We had to give up the hot pants, it was one of the conditions of us getting the Olympics. Damn the IOC for cutting down our style.

Tbh, I haven't really looked at Ke$ha's clothing choices, or anything other than her face for that matter. I can't get past the blinding glare of chunky glitter pieces :) .

Serious question though, are there areas of the States where these kinds of clothes are worn? I know that in Tdot and Vancouver, and potentially Montreal, gold hot pants would fly at ~some~ clubs, but here people definitely just buy AA clothes for bachelor/ette parties and for jokes. But there's got to be some sort of market for it if they keep manufacturing it, right?

Well some of your friends seem to like that look LOL:D

And in Miami, people will rock their gold lame hot pants or their AA apparel to the club, but usually certain clubs and certain types of peope. Mainly white hipsters and club kids.

In Detroit it's the hipsters that shop at AA.

The first, last and only place I've seen gold hot pants was when I saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I couldn't work at AA even if I wanted to; I blow dry my hair.

BTW, are there guys that actually dress like the men in the photos?

Yes, but the real question is, Why do men dress like that?
