Letters of recommendation

Hello to all,

Happy Friday!! This question is in regards to NPHC Intake; however, anyone's insight is welcome:)

So, I am interested in ABC sorority but I have a mentor who is a member of XYZ sorority. Is it inappropriate to ask my mentor for a letter of recommendation?

are you wanting to ask XYZ member to write a rec for ABC sorority? Because she wont be able to do that...

but, if you want XYZ member to write a rec for XYZ sorority that is perfectly fine. Being open to as many options of sororities is best, so even though XYZ may not be your first choice now, it's still good to get a rec for it as you may end up loving XYZ in the future.

Wrong lane, honey. NPHC organizations don't work that way.

She is discussing NPHC sororities. Those recommendations are TOTALLY different from NPC sorority recs.

 How different exactly?? Could it be compared to asking professors for recommendations for graduate school? But the sorority is the substitution?

I was addressing BeeVee (who was talking about NPC recs).

I actually have no clue how it works. I just know (from GC interaction) that it is not the same as ours.

Your best source of info would be the ABC members that you know.

With NPC sororities, potential members sign up for recruitment and are encouraged to keep an open mind---they aren't "rushing" ABC or XYZ, they are going through recruitment looking at every chapter. Potential members want to get a recommendation for each sorority on her campus. An ABC alum may only write a rec for ABC and not for XYZ.

With NPHC sororities, interested women research the groups themselves, and then choose one to pursue. If things don't work out with her chosen group, she does not pursue another group. As far as the recommendation process is concerned, I do not know how the NPHC works.

It depends on the type of recommendation. As KSU said, ask the members that you know. I also suspect that the answer is on the website of the sorority you are pursuing.

Okay. Thank you.

BeeBee23 06-04-2010 11:29 PM

oh whoops. :) disregard my advise then.

Your best bet is to ask the members in the chapter you are trying to pursue membership in or better yet, wait until they tell you what's needed and ask the question if it doesn't come up. The answer will depend on the organization's rules (the NPHC orgs are independent and have their own policies and procedures) or more specifically what the chapter will accept. For example, a chapter might not care that your mentor is in another organization as long as this person is writing a rec for you as your manager at work or someone professional, not as a friend or family member, which to some orgs/chapters is not acceptable.
