Guarenteed Placement
 

I have a question for women who attend schools with guarenteed placement. When I use this term I mean, if they maximize all options throughout recruitment, you will be guarenteed at least 1 bid, assuming the PNM makes it to pref. If someone is right before pref and has say 3 options, and she loves one of them but hates the other two, what's stopping her from telling the 2 she hates during the party before pref that she's not interested and inevitably they'll cut her and she'll have a guarenteed bid to her first choice. Just something I was thinking about. No, I don't know anyone planning to do this, nor did I, just wondering.

There are many things that can "go wrong" with this plan. Three that I can think of off the top of my head:

1. There is no guarantee that the sorority she likes will extend an invitation to prefs and she could be completely cross cut.

2. The sororities she's mean to may have very low return rates and end up having to extend an invitation to prefs to everyone. (This doesn't always happen but it happens often enough with struggling chapters especially if they are under pressure of losing their charter for numbers reasons.)

3. The sorority she likes hears about her rudeness to the other chapters. She gets cross cut for being a bitch.

She has to attend pref to be guaranteed a bid. So if she pulled this at the event before pref at the 2 groups dropped her, she has no guarantee that the 3rd group will invite her to pref. So she's possibly killed whatever chance she had.

And not only that...say this plan does work, and she has one pref and gets into the sorority she likes. Unfortunately, that sorority didn't like her enough to put her on the first bid list and/or lose another girl that they liked more because she is filling their spot. But since the campus has GP, they're stuck. It will give "karma is a bitch" a whole new meaning and she'll probably end up disaffiliating anyway.

It may work, but it will likely severely ruin her sorority experience. No one wants to be known as (a) a mean girl and (b) as the girl who had to rely on GP to get into her chapter.

Also, as mentioned, they might be struggling chapters and extend her a bid anyways.

The story of that pnm's behavior will spread like wildfire throughout the campus, and the pnm will forever be "that girl."

Even if she waited to tell her second choice on pref night that she hated them, in hopes that she is WAY down on their bid list and gets a bid to her fave, she might still (thanks to RFM, quota additions) end up on the 2nd choice bid list.

Bottom line - a very risky move that would probably not pay off.

I know of a girl that did exactly this and got a bid to her first choice.:( I was her recruitment counselor and by the last day had told her about 2 billion times to stop badmouthing sororities. She either didn't understand the difference between "Oh I don't think I fit in here" and "These girls are all gigantic losers" or didn't care. But I will add this: though she's still a member of the sorority she got a bid to, many older sisters in the chapter let it be known that they didn't approve of her behavior and in the long run it helped her whole pledge class be less negative towards "bottom" sororities on campus. Unrelated, but it's a happier ending than it could have been.

I also know of girls that have been cut because they were nasty about chapters they deemed beneath them...it's a bad idea, not only because it's mean, but because sorority members WILL remember it when they hear about it.
