President Calderon's visit

President Calderon is a guest in the United States. I find his critique of the Arizona immigration law as discriminatory bad manners at best. More accurately, it is incredibly hypocritical. Here is a summation of how immigrants in Mexico are treated:

In brief, the Mexican Constitution states that:
• Immigrants and foreign visitors are banned from public political discourse.
• Immigrants and foreigners are denied certain basic property rights.
• Immigrants are denied equal employment rights.
• Immigrants and naturalized citizens will never be treated as real Mexican citizens.
• Immigrants and naturalized citizens are not to be trusted in public service.
• Immigrants and naturalized citizens may never become members of the clergy.
• Private citizens may make citizens arrests of lawbreakers (i.e., illegal immigrants)
and hand them to the authorities.
• Immigrants may be expelled from Mexico for any reason and without due process.

I think we should offer to treat illegal immigrants from Mexico exactly the same as Mexico treats those that invade her country.

I wonder what the Spanish word for Chutzpah is. . .

I was surprised the whole issue of 20,000 murdered in Mexico in the last two years wasn't made an issue but you have to look at the big picture. Mexico profits greatly by having their lower class immigrate to the U.S., both in billions a year in remittances and getting rid of their neediest citizens, why would anyone in Mexico want to stop that gravy train?

I agree that remittances are indeed one of the primary reasons Calderon doesn't care that a double standard exists. In fact, "After oil, remittances are Mexico's second-biggest source of hard currency, ahead of tourism and manufactured goods" to quote a WSJ Online Article from January 2009.

Wolf Blitzer gave a pretty good interview with Calderon yesterday. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOn8RZZ5wuA
He pointed out the inconsistency with Mexico enforcing immigration laws and expecting the US not to do so so. With true political obfuscation, Calderon appeared oblivious to the hypocrisy.

I really find it hard to believe he's oblivious to it, maybe he feels that the double-standard he holds on the issue is somehow justifiable. I know some argue that the southwest U.S. should still belong to Mexico regardless of The outcomes of war or the gadson purchase.
