Is anyone else paying for greek life yourself?

It sucks when it seems like everyone else's parents are paying for their sorority. And it seems like the girls who aren't paying for it themselves don't really have worries of whether or not to disaffiliate because it's kind of like, "oh well... my moms paying for it so its not MY money im losing." i'm not trying to offend anyone, but im paying so much money, for tshirts, stress, and friends who are cliquish. are other sororities like this? :/

QFP

Well, I imagine that there are girls in just about every chapter who do pay for their own dues and etc. I am not in that situation but I still fully participate and do not "waste" money. If girls are only looking at it from a "well its just money" standpoint instead of a "this is something I am involved in and should give it my best" well then I think it is sad. If you are involved and giving this much time to something then you should give effort to it (so long as it isn't messing up your school. education first!).

Cliques... well late teens early twenties women... it sucks I know, but well it's life? I'm sorry. There are hard times and good times with membership in a sorority. Some days suck. Especially when it seems that everyone is in little cliques who don't give two cents to what the chapter needs or is doing. However, you are a member who is putting in effort and wants to be in it (I assume if you are willing to pay for it yourself). So stick it through. Try to break into some of the cliques. Maybe try to have a large sisterhood event or a candle pass to help break barriers. You could also try to run for an executive position and make changes in the chapter.

Good luck.

Some thoughts:

There are women whose parents paid for their sorority experience who are VERY involved. Having parents pay doesn't = not taking it seriously.

It seems as if you are having issues with your chapter moreso than the fact that you have to pay for it yourself (especially with the way you describe it as "tee shirts and stress."

Lol. As soon as I saw the username I did one of these . I was hoping someone else would remember.

To answer your question OP, I pay for my dues myself.

So...cliques are the fault of daddy's money:rolleyes: Since when don't people have close friends in a group? I paid for my dues in college...I worked a job during the summer and winter breaks and lived very frugally so that I didn't need a job during school months. My parents would have paid my dues if my father hadn't lost his job during my freshman year. Did anyone else know that I paid my own dues? Probably not since I didn't work at school. My mom was adamant that I not work during school. She wanted me to focus on my school work. I suggest that the OP get over herself and realize that she may not know the financial situation of every member of her chapter.

you all just made me feel like shit.

thanks

You need counseling.

ADPiTigergurl 05-05-2010 09:15 AM

yep I pay for my dues myself. my parents told me when i started talking about going through recruitment (they werent the most supportive people) that they couldn't stop be from joining, but they would not be financing my sorority. It is smething I want and therefore its my responsibilty to make sure I get it (or get to stay in it). Does it stink sometimes? YES. Is It worth it? ABSOLUTELY!!!

Your dues money would be better spent on a shrink.

^ LOL

In my experience, there was one woman whose parents paid her dues while I was in school - she did not want to go greek, and was forced into it by her super legacy status.

As an advisor, the woman who got teased the most was the only sister whose parents paid for her dues (and everything else).

I'm sorry that you're so unhappy in your sorority, but don't use the "everybody but me" line. It's old and rarely true.

Seriously? So, first you feel left out because you have a boyfriend and can't slut it up.

Now, you feel left out because you pay for your own dues?

Sorry to break it to you, hon, but your priorities are seriously messed up.
