Microdermabrasion?

My gym raffled off several prizes in celebration of its anniversary, and I won a series of microdermabrasion treatments at a local medi spa. I'm so excited because I've always been curious about trying it!

Has anyone had this before? What are the results like after the first treatment? Anything I need to know ahead of time? Thanks GCers!

I've had microderm several times. Honestly, I was expeciting great results the first time but it's really no more than super-exfoliation. Makes your skin rosie for a few days.

I do like it, but don't set my expectations up for a miracle treatment.

My mom has it done every once in a while and she loves it. She also looks great and gets compliments on her skin all the time.

I could never do it - my skin is too sensitive.

Congratulations on winning the prize, ThetaDancer!

I'm interested, too. I have nice skin, but after my brother's doberman tried to take my nose off, I have three little scars that I'd really like to lose. Nobody else sees them, but I do, and each time, I remember the horror. It's either lose the scars, or use Spackle.

I agree with Benzgirl.
I enjoyed getting it done but it's not a cure-all for skin ailments. I've definitely never heard any microderm horror stories though so go for it since it was free! Just don't do it the day of OR the day before a major event because your face will likely be red (and mine was always shiny the next day).

Microdermabrasion is basically a "sexier" way of saying sandpapering your skin.
I get chemical peels at the esthetician which is another way to exfoliate, but she uses strong stuff, so I am a bit red for 2-3 days after (but a lil' makeup helps to temper that down).

How were the chemical peels? Would they be better to reduce scars?

I really need to read up on these procedures!

HC, it's probably best to go in for a consultation. I've also had "Fractionated Laser Resurfacing", but for that, I stayed home for 3 days because my skin needed time to heal (don't be alarmed - I was forewarned about this).

I'll send you a PM.

I had fraxel done last year on my face (laser resurfacing). I did 6 treatments- 1 month apart. It helps with scars and sundamage. I personally was not impressed with the procedure as my acne scars are still pretty noticeable (at least to me). I likely will be getting laser treatment for those specific areas. I am a redhead and have very very sensitive paper thin skin. Not sure if the fraxel was a good idea. I would be swollen for up to 5 days and would have scabs for 7 to 10 days. It was pretty painful even with lidocaine gel.

I am having Co2 laser done on my chest right now for sundamage/wrinkles, then I get the area treated with microderm abrasion a week later (total of 5 treatments, I have done 3 thus far)-will see how this turns out. I personally like the microderm part-it makes my skin feel smooth.

I would like to get microderm done on my face regularly but it can get pretty pricey.
