HUGE QUESTION; Sigma Pi Phi & Alpha Phi Alpha
I was doing my research on BGLOs and found that Alpha Phi Alpha was not the first BGLO it was Alpha Kappa Nu (Kappa Alpha Psi) which ended up failing. Then came Sigma Pi Phi (a highly secretive; for a while; BGLO that only opened up membership to highly established African American males, and is still an active fraternity.
If this is the case then why does Alpha Phi Alpha and every other BGLO recognize Alpha Phi Alpha as the FIRST? I understand that Sigma Pi Phi did not open up membership to those in college (for a while, but when they did they changed their minds). I also understand that membership into Sigma Pi Phi was and still is highly selective and was known to only be for the African-American bourgeoisie. However it still doesn't erase the fact that when it comes to ESTABLISHED BGLOs Sigma Pi Phi is number one. Another concern is that since this is true, why is it that when I was doing my research Sigma Pi Phi is never mentioned. Is it taboo because the first BGLO had such discriminating taste against their own race? I must know. Is it only called Divine Nine instead of Divine Ten because Alpha Phi Alpha did not affiliate themselves with Sigma Pi Phi but yet there were members like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who carried dual membership in both organizations? I am not trying to be disrespectful in anyway. Can someone just answer my question? Thank You. |
This is not "huge" by any means.
And this topic has been discussed here in the past. Do a search. |

Since you are in research mode, did you know the founder of Sigma Pi Phi later became an Alpha? WE ARE JUST THAT AWESOME. By the way, Sigma Pi Phi is probably never mentioned in your research because the texts you're using are likely focusing on intercollegiate fraternities, which Sigma Pi Phi is not. It is a professional fraternity. |

He wasn't being a dick about it, so I figured I could be nice for a change. I mean, what else is there to do in a moratorium but research until you get burned out? Which he probably did. |
Oh yay this question again! Yaaaaaaay!

Thanks Senusret I for clarifying. In all the websites that I looked through it never mentioned Sigma Pi Phi as a professional fraternity which explains why there was dual memberships. By the way I am FEMALE not interested in joining any organization. I am just researching for my personal benefit and getting an early start on a thesis for Sociology |

Good luck on your thesis research and be prepared for actually doing research (not just website searches) where there is no GreekChat.com and SenusretI to give you quick answers. |
