Hello,

Hi everyone,

I'm transferring to a new school next semester ((I'll be in my 3rd year when I transfer)) and I am interested in rushing in the fall. I was wondering if anyone could tell me about rushing and just clear up some common misconceptions.

Thanks, :)

I'm not really sure about the "rushing" process. Is it brutal?? Then once you get a bid then what?? How can you decide if you get multiple bids? Then once you choose your sorority what happens?? How do you let them know who you've chosen? Then what happens?:confused::confused:

Keep in mind too that the process is obviously a little different at every school. Contact your school's Greek Life office - they should be pretty helpful!

Also: the process is never referred to as 'rushing'. It's recruitment. Always recruitment.

Correcting the rushee/PNM in such a manner is far more offensive than her using the term "rush."

Also, schools with all-local Greek systems (which the OP may be at - she didn't specify) do not usually use the term "recruitment." Nor do fraternities.

If you are participating in formal recruitment with NPC sororities, you may only receive one bid. It is not permissible nor possible to receive two or more bids, due to the bid matching mechanisms & strategies in place. It *IS* possible to receive no bids also.

.
Only formally. People use the term rush all of the time, this isn't something to be correcting posters about

However, if the school is doing informal or partially/minimally structured recruitment, multiple bids may be possible.

Aw, she's just a newbie drinkin' the kool-aid. They'll pull that stick out of her ass at initiation.;)

Seriously, though - I wonder how many of these girls entering college have never heard "rush" used on a consistent basis because it's been "recruitment" as long as they've been old enough to know what Greek life is. "Recruitment" (as opposed to Rush) is from around the year 2000, right? Which would have made the girls rushing now 8 years old when the switch was made.

Ok, who else now feels old?:p

Yep. And I wouldn't count on "recruitment" always being used formally. On a nearby college campus this past year, I saw lots of signs (official ones) for things having to do with NPC sororities' "rush."

"Rush" sounds so much more fun than "recruitment." I'm just sayin'.

Not to mention tradition dies hard in the Greek world.

It's a lot of fun, but it can be tiring. If you're going through NPC formal recruitment, you and the other girls will be split into small groups. You'll have a guide accompanying your group who will be able to address all of your concerns. You'll get a chance to see all of the chapter houses or rooms, and to talk with members of the chapters. In my case, the girls were universally polite and pleasant, and the chapter houses were beautiful. Once you walk through the door, a chapter member will greet you and either chat with you the entire time or pass you off to meet another sister. Sometimes you watch short videos or a skit, or make a craft with your hostess. No worries! :)

I got to college in '02 and we still called it rush up until when I graduated (of course, all our paperwork said recruitment and as recruitment counselors we had to be sure we were always saying recruitment).

TrueStar 05-01-2010 11:45 AM

I was on campus a couple of weeks ago to talk to my advisor and I saw a giant sign that said 'RUSH' and had an arrow pointing where I could only assume Greek stuff was happening. :p I thought the whole rush thing was odd in April anyway, but I didn't know about continuous recruitment at time. Maybe that was the case.

In my emails asking about my university specifically and for recs, I use 'recruitment'. It seems a more proper word to use.
