My dog made a "friend"...
 

Ok so my dog was chillin outside. Lately he goes outside and comes right back in but yesterday and today he was hanging out extra long. The other day I went outside with him and he was really gettin into one of our evergreen-like trees (I don't know what it's called) in the yard and I heard scurrying. I thought eh it'll get away.

He was just outside and I saw him tearing up something. I went outside, praying that he brought his piece of bread out there and that that's what it was. As I got closer, I saw red. No blood, just body carcus. Connected to the feet. I guess I could have gotten a couple lucky rabbit's feet but I was trying not to vomit as I realized what my dog had done. I just stared at him telling him he was a murderer and a weirdo. I had to shovel the "leftovers". Then an obvious thought popped into my head.... it's only half the body. Where are the front paws and head? OMG.

I am SO traumatized. my dog has no blood on him and I checked his paws and teeth and everything is clean. I called the emergency vet and she said to just keep an eye on vomiting and diarhea. I know mine isn't the first to do it but it's HIS first. I don't think he killed it either so I'm wondering WHAT killed it. Poor Thumper.

What kind of "friends" have your dogs made?

How horrifying!! My dog made not so nice-nice with a squirrel once, not a pretty site. Sorry AGDs! lol

My good friend's old dog did this. How sweet of her! :D

Well, she brought a dead duck to the back door one day this winter (see the TMI thread for details). I have found dead squirrels in the backyard, but it's hard to know if she killed them. They were still in one piece. I made her drop a live duck once and I made her drop a baby rabbit once. The rabbit was no longer alive. I'm afraid to think about what she eats back there. Personally, I think she just wants to play with them and kills them by accident. She's never had blood on her. I don't think I could handle that. After the first duck incident (the live one), my daughter was really mad at her. My logic? She's an Alaskan Malamute. By instinct, she finds whatever food she can, whenever she can. In her "wild" state, she would be in the arctic and never know where her next meal was coming from. Therefore, she eats anything she can, whenever she can. It's not her fault.

I had a bird feeder near the side of my house, right next to a bush for a while. I started finding dead birds and figured it was West Nile, honestly. Then I came home from work one day and when I slammed my car door, the neighbor's cat, Bob, came out from under the bush that was right next to the bird feeder. I stopped feeding the birds. It was not intended to be bait for the birds so the cat could kill them! When Bob was mad at his family for getting a new kitten, he left me gifts of dead birds and mice on my porch. He was trying to get me to take him in, since they had "betrayed" him. That cat still loves me. They don't live next door anymore, but when I go to their house, Bob shows up from where ever he was hiding and jumps in my lap for me to pet him. I think he misses me :) I miss him because I used to know the mice in the neighborhood would never be a problem as long as Bob was on the job!

AGDee I still can't believe your dog hunts as much as she does - she's doing that allll by smell - crazy!

I think she happens on stuff that something else has already injured, honestly. She's so slow from arthritis now and almost totally blind... she's got to be either finding stuff by accident or the animals aren't afraid of her because she's so slow. The squirrels taunt her. She hears them go up a tree and she stands under the tree while they chatter at her. Then they hop from tree to tree and she's still standing there, under the tree, waiting for them long after they are gone. She and the dog next door will be sniffing at each other through the fence and the other dog runs and she just stands there, trying to figure out where the other dog went. It's kind of sad, really!

well first and foremost, they are predatory creatures soooooo........well...hehehe

My dog (God rest her soul) used to be a mouse machine. We continually ran across her victims on the porch. I was horrified, but my mom was all proud of her because she was better than any poison or trap we could buy.

Um, no, he's a dog, doing what comes sorta naturally, although we seem to want to forget that. (What kind of dog, by the way?)

Our dog (a collie -- a shepherd, not a hunter) killed a rabbit once. We made her sleep outside that night, not as punishment but just in case she felt like throwing up. Only time she did anything like that (that we know of). We heard the rabbit scream - very weird.

Our golden got hold of a turtle and tried to chew it up. Broke the shell a little. My wife saw what was going on and got it away from him and let the turtle go outside the yard.

Maybe I'm a little callous about it, but dogs will be dogs.

Lol I call him a little weirdo all the time. He's not a dog... he's a human trapped in a dog's body. I swear this dog has more personality than my niece and nephew. He's a Maltese Poodle. I think I'm more shocked cuz this is his first time, and I don't think it would have been as bad if it had been the whole rabbit and not just rabbit feet connected to guts. I need to find the remains again and toss them. He keeps going back there... and I still don't know where the head is.

So he does at least have some hunting related instincts. Maybe?
Yeah, I think our collie was about 8 when she took down that rabbit. We figure she'd just had enough and snapped. :D
