Grad student interested in rushing at UGA

Hey everyone,

I am currently applying for law school at UGA. Although I understand law school takes up so much time, I also need to have the social aspect of graduate school as well. I always had been interested in rushing for a fraternity in my undergrad, and I believe that by attending law school, this maybe a second chance.

Also, I understand that fraternities usually recruit undergrad students, are there any fraternities at UGA that recruit grad students as well?

I'm almost 100% sure graduate students are not allowed to rush under NIC regulations. I know of a few sororities that allow grad school members (Phi Sigma Sigma, is one I think), but I can't think of any fraternities that do.

Plus, what would you have in common with mixing with a bunch of freshman girls or hanging out with a freshman pledge class?

Wrong. NIC does not interfere with the membership selection of it's members in anyway. Each fraternity is allowed to set it's own standard of membership.

While the NIC does not interfere with membership selection a LARGE percentage of NIC organizations restrict membership to undergrads. I do not even know how to go about looking for those who do not.

Are you sure you're going to have the free time to participate in a fraternity as a 1L?

/lane swerve.

By talking to members of the NIC organizations.

I think he meant more en masse. For the OP he'd need to look at every chapter on his campus individually and find out, but there probably isn't a way to make a complete overall list without going to each national website and checking one by one either.

Unless you know, someone else on GC's done it before.

I know what he meant, but there would be no point in having a list like that. Knowing that ABC Fraternity accepts grad students is useless if ABC Fraternity doesn't exist at University of State.

Eh, it wouldn't help the OP, but it's one of those "interesting facts" that I personally enjoy learning about GLOs. It really wouldn't be "useful" just interesting.

I can pretty much guarantee you he will not have the time or the energy. I know some law students who would participate in some specific chapter events occasionally -- I did sometimes. But there really is not time to be an active chapter member, much less a pledge, and also do law school well.

AR1000, focus on law school. I'm fairly confident there will be a good social life there, which will involve your fellow law students and will complement, not compete with your studies. Also, you might find a group like Phi Delta Phi or Phi Alpha Delta to be up your alley (assuming they have chapters there; I haven't taken the time to check).

You said you've always been interested in rushing? Is there a reason you didn't?

Don't move down south, just stay up in Yankee-ville.

Y'all already invaded once, quit doing it...y'all already won the Battle of the Research Triangle.

Really? This is the first I've heard that. Are you sure you don't mean NIC organizations on your campus?

I think he's right. I'm in Grad School right now, and I'm active.

lucgreek 06-26-2010 02:42 AM

My group specifically states in our bylaws that only undergrads can be active members. Victory lap seniors can still be members, but once they go to grad school, they're alum.

My mistake for thinking this was a rule for most organizations.

You will not get a bid as a grad student, nor will you want to have friends who are that much more immature than you.
