The James City, N.C., husband and wife have been wed 85 years and hold the Guinness World Record for the longest marriage of a living couple. Banners and signs celebrating that record decorate the front lawn of their ranch-style home. They’ve captured the attention of newspapers, magazines and websites everywhere. And just recently, they received a signed commendation from President Obama with a promise of an official invitation to the White House to meet him. |

Damn, and I thought my parents were married a long time. They're going on 47 years, but compared to the couple above, they make my folks look like newlyweds.

I saw that this morning and thought "Awww! Too cute! The world's longest marriage and it so happens to be a Black marriage in the South. Who woulda thunk!?"
He's 104 and she's 101, which means he was 19 and she was 16. They were born in the early 1900s (I assume in NC). So it is still cute (assuming it is a healthy and happy marriage), but it's no longer shockingly awesome. PrettyBoy, 47 years is darn good and context matters. :) Perhaps your parents will make it to 85 years, but that is generally a testament to longer than average life expectancy. People who get married later in life would be doing darn well if they made it to 47 years. :D |
Very nice story! And I love how they "tweeted" their advice! :)

SO freakin' adorable. And they both look GREAT for their ages!!

I just thought it was the sweetest thing but I also thought about how couples really have to work to keep a marriage/relationship going.

Amazing story!! Thanks for sharing!!
The only thing that bugged me were all the hyperlinks in the article. |
