North Face Jackets
Can someone please explain why these are so great? I just can't see spending $70 on a fleece jacket.
|
I am on my second North Face, and I will never buy another jacket. It is, BY FAR, the warmest jacket I have, including my heavy duty blizzard-esque Columbia jacket.
This is assuming you don't just get a plain fleece but you get the Denali, which has the nylon on top. And if you get one, get the one with the hood. |
I have the fleeces in several colors, which I love love love. This, however, is the best thing I've ever owned.

I have the Denali and the plain fleece one and the wind goes right through them! I don't think they are very warm for their price at all.

Okay, I have two North Face jackets, the Denali and then the Nuptse (http://www.thenorthface.com/webapp/w...ariationId=001).
Honestly, I was suckered into the Denali. Everyone had one, I thought it was cool, I needed a jacket, so I got one. It's a decent jacket, but it really doesn't keep me that warm. I don't wear it if it get's lower than 35 maybe 30. The Nuptse on the other hand is great! Definitely worth it. |
Are they any better than Patagonias?

They wear like iron. They are lightweight. You can throw them in the washer anytime. They dry quickly. They keep you warm on cooler spring and fall days, and warmer winter days. The color doesn't fade. They are long enough in the torso for taller girls. They come in a lot of colors. They aren't scratchy. They make a pretty good pillow on the train or plane. And did I mention they wear like iron?

Ooooh ok. One of my best friends will like buy one in September, then in November need another so I just figured they weren't a quality item. But, you guys seem to like them so maybe I'll give one a try.

I'll be honest they've done something odd at North Face in the past year or so. I have my circa 2003-04 pink Denali fleece, size large. It is getting a little worn on the inside from rubbing against my pants that have rivets. It still fits and I wear it. I was at REI in January and considered getting a newer one in a different color and it didn't fit, went up a size, still didn't fit, yet I had on my original one which fits just fine. I don't think that I've gotten a bigger chest or shoulders, and the salesperson told me that people had been making comments about the sizing. I just looked online and I think they are making them longer and more womanly cut, but mine was for zipping into a jacket so that would be a problem anyway.
Considering that kind of sizing change, and that your friend wore hers out, perhaps something is afoot at the North Face design center and factory. Maybe it was a bad batch, but I was not impressed and went with Arc'Teryx which didn't make me question my perception of my body. |

Penguin08 - not sure where you live, but if you're in an area that gets snow and cold weather, a good jacket is more than worth the money. |

I also just bought a pair of their fleece sweatpants to replace my "dead" ones. The 1st pair I bought lasted significantly longer than these new ones, I've only been wearing them for 2 months and they've already died. :( |
