Alternatives if you dont recieve a bid from your first choice sorority?

Hi I have a question regarding the rushing process.

Can you still join the sorority that you didn't put as first choice?

For example I know you are required to put your 1st and 2nd choice during bid day. What if you dont get a bid from either of your top 2 choices, howver you got a bid from your 3rd choice and you didn't mind going to that sorority at all becasue you felt that it was just as good as your 1st and 2nd choice, can you still go there?

If you don't get a bid thru the normal process of signing your bid card (having it not match to any of those listed), then yes, you are free to accept a bid from any other group you wish as you have, so to speak, been released from the process. You are not bound to those you list unless you get a bid from one of them.

Hope this answers the question as I am little confused by how you stated the question.

is this hypothetical or did this really happen to you? was this during formal recruitment? did you not match either of the sororities that you visited for prefs. and listed on your bid card? were you snap bid by the third sorority? can you explain a little further? we need a little more information(but not your college or the names of the sororities ).

According to another post she is an international student and will be rushing this coming fall.

To the OP:
You can only accept bids that are offered to you. In most situations the bid will come from chapters that you attend for preference round. In unique situations you could receive a bid from a group that you did not attend for preference, but this is rare and several criterion must be met.

At this point I would just relax, exhale, and wait until you get to campus and attend recruitment orientation. You can also surf around this site, as virtually every question that could be imagined has been answered here somewhere. If there are any left, especially those that are campus specific, you can have those answered at recruitment orientation and by your recruitment counselor.

My advice is to read everything you can in the recruitment threads.

Most importantly, search for threads on acquiring Recommendations. it may be a challenge to do so from afar, but it is possible. In the meantime, check out threads particular to your perspective schools, as well as their Greek websites.

You seem to have some knowledge about recruitment, but it doesn't hurt to really understand the PROCESS. Even American students have problems understanding how recruitment works for girls hoping to join a sorority. Having knowledge will give you an advantage over people who do not.

You don't have to share, but may I ask what part of the world (continent) you are from? I am asking not to be nosy or impolite but I am always intrigued as to what draws people from other nations to Greek life at American universities.

Good luck with your education (that's most important!!) and with everything else that follows.

Thanks ree-Xi for your advice I've been doing some research lately throughout the recruitment threads. Anyways I'm from Hong Kong and studying at an international school, I've moved quite a bit and in my previous school I had a friend who graduated in 2009 and joined a sorority during freshmen year and seemed to have enjoyed it very much, so I thought I might want to give it a try when i enter freshmen year during Fall :)

i am sure that you have asked her about her experience-if not, do so, remembering that different campuses do recruitment differently. even so, the general knowledge that she can share and that you can gleen from GC can give you some idea of what to expect.
