transfer and affiliation

If I transfer to a different school that has a Theta chapter but decide that the chapter is not for me and choose not to affiliate, will I lose my status as a Theta and never get to be an Alum?

Didn't we JUST have a question identical to this posted yesterday or something?

ETA: And not to speak for the Thetas or anything, but as I understand to be the case with all NPCs, if you transfer schools and don't affiliate with the chapter there, you would automatically become an alumna member (unless you left your last chapter in "poor standing" - don't meet GPA requirements, behind on financial obligations, etc).

But please.. someone correct me if I'm wrong!

Yes, I did read that one. I'm sorry if this seems redundant but I was hoping for answers more specific to Theta.. That post had mostly ADPi responses and I know that they have many different requirements than we do.

hi thetalove91! You might want to contact HQ for definitive answers ;) but to the best of my knowledge, affiliation isn't mandatory & you would, as previously pointed out, achieve alumna status rather than losing your membership.

You should also be able to find the answer to your question in the Kappa Alpha Theta Bylaws & Constitution. You can find it online in the passworded section of the website; www.kappaalphatheta.org. HQ will base their answer on those.

Hi Ladies,

Affiliation is not required if you move to a school away from your initiating chapter. You certainly do not lose your future alumna status.

One word of caution: be very careful and deliberate about affiliation, as you are taking on a commitment to the new chapter you join. You're agreeing to live in their facility, and participate as a member until you graduate. You cannot 'un-affiliate' if the chapter is not a good fit for you. (I know it's not a word, but there's no other good way to describe it)

I bring this up, because of an experience I had as Advisory Board Chairman ~15 years ago.. (ugh, now I feel old. ) We had a young woman transfer into our school and affiliate with the local chapter immediately. For whatever reason, she decided the fit wasn't right for her, and wanted to stop participating. Unfortunately she was a sophomore and had 2 more years of membership requirements left-her only option at that point was to resign. It about killed me to accept her resignation.

We also had some wonderful affiliates, who loved it and were among the most active members of the chapter, so it goes both ways. It may take you a semester or two to decide, and that's okay. Do what works for you!

good luck!

-K
