UVA/ VA-Tech re-rushing
Ok so I attend UVA and my best friend goes to Va-Tech. We have both recently rushed and basically got placed in one of our lower choice chapters. We've both decided to give it a try for some time, but I have to ask SOME questions.
So I've been reading on here that we can't re-rush for a full year bc of NPC. But if we want to re-rush in the Spring of 2011, will we be at a disadvantage? We are both currently IN chapters (because we signed pref cards) but have only been for a short time. We're not initiated or anything, just VERY new members. I guess I'm looking for a school specific answer? If that is at ALL possible. I feel like I will have it worse off at UVA to re-rush, but will it be hard for my Tech friend also? Will our sororities tell other sororities not to let us in? (Even though if I drop out for personal reasons, not me being like "well I hate XYZ." And likewise for my friend...) Trust me I am giving this a try but I don't think it's fair to "XYZ" to stay in it for 4 years when I know I can't put my whole heart into it. PLEASE if anyone knows about UVA/ Va-Tech re-rushing......PLEASE. |

You know, I was going to be mean and then a little voice in my head told me I should "exercise compassion and understanding when dealing with all persons" so here we are...
You haven't really given your sorority that much of a chance. Keep trying to find your place in it, go to events, be involved. If you still don't like it, drop out before initiation. Being anything but the average PNM during recruitment makes it difficult. Pledging and dropping will definitely make it harder, but you're already in that boat so it can't hurt to keep trying to make it work before initiation and deciding where to go from there. Back to my lane... |
These two recent threads might help; you can also use the search function effectively and efficiently to find out more information.
http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...d.php?t=110936 http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...d.php?t=110944 I point out that you've divulged some personally identifying information about yourself and your friend which would make you both very easy to spot should you pursue de-pledging and then going through recruitment a second time. No one on GC will be able to give you the specific answers that you seek. Reading your post, it appears that you want to know the outcome of the race before you place your bet. Would that we all had that knowledge or that crystal ball. Whatever you decide, good luck on your journey. |
I PMed you.
Also, remember that you're not just joining for 4 years. I know UVA chapters don't always push this, but you're a member for life. There are alumnae chapters all over the place, and I've had an incredibly rewarding experience as an alumnae. |
once you sign the card that everyone signs after pref. round, whether you physically sign it or it is done on the computer, you are not allowed to rush again for a year, if you receive a bid. if your schools formal recruitment is held in january and you joined then, you must wait until january of the following year to rush again. it does not matter how long you gave your sorority a try or when you dropped your membership, so technically you could give it a try until right before your initiation, drop your membership and still be able to rerush next january, providing you do not get initiated. you would not be eligible to participate in fall informal recruitment because it would not have been a year yet.
and i second what xylochick said-i have had way more fun as an alumna than i could have ever imagined, and i have met sisters from all over the country who i count among my friends. i never expected to move out of florida, but i have lived in several states and was so glad that i had sisters(that i didn't even know at the time, from different colleges) to call for advice on doctors, dentists, schools, restaurants, etc. give your sorority more time and really try to get to know your sisters and make some friends within the chapter. as far as would your chapter tell on you to the other sororities on campus(or at your friends school), i don't know. often all the chapters know which girls pledged where because they see them on bid day and around campus wearing their "xyz" or "ab" stuff. you will need to decide if it is worth the chance to try again and maybe not receive a bid at all next time, or to remain a sister in your sorority. |

you probably won't stand a chance at UVA if you quit your chapter in order to join another one. Probably not at Tech either.

This instant gratification generation continues to irk me.
Honestly, you've been in for what, a week? This isn't "Next" where you get off the bus, look at the guy and say "next." Think about if someone did that to YOU - that's basically what you want to do to these sororities. In other words, think about someone other than yourself. |

And if you were thinking of transfering, this will hurt your chances if you stay in state. (MOst likely, anyway. It def. will at RU, JMU, GMU, and I'd imagine W&L. You would have go out of state somewhere to pledge again, in the most likely sequence of occurances.) |

Because I have friends who attended/ are now attending both UVA and VA-Tech, I'm here to tell you that I already have an idea what chapters you and your buddy have joined. For the record, both the sororities that you two joined are incredible. Do you want to know why they are incredible? They are NPC and girls who go bidless, each year, would kill to be in your spot. I'm really getting sick of all these women coming on here and trash-talking the same women who took a chance on them. |
