San Francisco, California (CNN) -- Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday unveiled the iPad, a tablet computer that he called "a truly magical and revolutionary product."

"What this device does is extraordinary," Jobs said. "It's the best browsing experience you've ever had. Way better than a laptop. Way better than a smartphone."

The tablet will act as a sort of missing link between a smartphone and laptop. The model Jobs demonstrated at an invitation-only event in San Francisco operated without a hardware keyboard, with Jobs typing on its glass screen.

It has a nearly 10-inch screen, runs existing apps from the Apple apps store and is available in 16-gigabyte and 64-gigabyte versions, according to Jobs.

Jobs said the iPad will be lightning fast: "It screams," he told a crowd that incluced former Vice President Al Gore.

Some members of the struggling print media have expressed hope in recent weeks that a popular Apple tablet could renew interest in their content while bringing new revenue through subscription plans or iTunes purchases.

I'm not really sure how this is different from a big iPhone.

DaemonSeid 01-27-2010 03:02 PM

it's an oversized netbook and e reader.

I am watching the live feed now...I am waiting for the price...

Obviously, none of Apples developpers are women.

Next they'll come out with the iTampon.

I knew that you'd post about this, DS lol

I agree that it looks like nothing more than a large iPhone. I'll wait for the iDouche.

DaemonSeid 01-27-2010 03:14 PM

wow....LOL

so far I am only mildly impressed.

It looks like a nice niche product but nothing world shattering.

YAWWWWWWWWWWWWtothemuthafuckinNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN. ...

Then again, I'm not a technology person. Having a Blackberry, using the Internet, and having CDs and DVDs is a big damn deal to me. :p

iPad, ay? We were just talking about this in my marketing communications on Monday. My TA was saying that since the product had not been announced yet (she thought it was going to be announced this week--guess she was right) there was a lot of speculation going around about it either being called the iSlate or iTablet. I think I would have preferred those to iPad.

I'm not going to lie, though - if it's fairly inexpensive (the rumors have been putting it under $1000), we'll see.

I'd like to have an e-reader that I can do other things (like play bejeweled) on.

Would not replace books, but having a good e-reader would make me happy while traveling/going to and from work. I've been investigating the Kindle and Nook.

ETA: Can you get it without the contract to start? Because I'd rather cut off my right arm than give anything to AT&T, and I'd really rather Apple and AT&T stop doing this shit.

I can see myself using it in a similar way to how I use my iPod touch. Well, I mean - iPod Touch:music and apps = iPad:books and apps.

Tis what i thought - seems like a cross between a Kindle and an iPhone.

yeah, i would MUCH prefer calling it iSlate or iTablet, or iTab. though iPod sounds silly too but were past the point of no return there.

Maybe they're trying to make it sound like iPod? That's my only thought...

I think more likely than not they were trying to stay on the iPod, iPhone theme.

But obviously iTablet would have been waaaaaaaay better.

ETA: lovespink JINX!
