U of Kentucky "Spring" 2010 Informal Recruitment

From article in the student paper:

UK Panhellenic is stepping in and working closer with sororities to bring in more new pledges this year, a task that used to be left up to each participating chapter.

Catherine Chin, Panhellenic president, said the decision was made to have a more structured spring recruitment schedule after seeing the success of one specific chapter when it became more organized.

“Alpha Phi was more structured within itself and it worked really well,” Chin said. “Now (recruitment) is much more structured. We have a day by day schedule and themes for every day.”

. . . “(Each chapter) used to just do it on their own, like a sorority would have girls over for an ice cream social or to watch a movie. It was up to them,” she said. “(This year) it’s not as formal as fall recruitment, it’s a little more relaxed and not as dressy, but it’s more structured.”

Katelynn Thomas, Panhellenic vice president of recruitment, said she hopes the changes will get more students interested in recruitment.

. . . .
Chapters that participate in spring recruitment are those that have not met their chapter total for members. Chapters participating this semester are Alpha Phi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Delta Zeta and Sigma Kappa.

Those interested must register with Panhellenic to participate in the week’s events at ukpanhellenic.com

Hopefully it will bring out more girls and girls should have more choices,” Thomas said. “Usually with spring recruitment it was sort of friends of friends because that’s how you would hear about it. But Panhellenic has the ability to advertise all across campus."
I could swear that this is how it was when I was an undergrad many moons ago at UK. The Campus Panhellenic use to take an ad out in the student newspaper to promote spring rush - as it was called at the time. I recall panhellenic helped to organize a round of open houses for each chapter participating so that each chapter had a list of all the girls interested and each PNM would have a list of each "open" party. After that, each chapter would go about their recruitment (COB / COR) as best fit the chapter. Some went right to invite only parties, while others had maybe one or two more "open house" type events before they had an invite only.

And if I remember correctly, many of the so called "top chapters" participated in spring rush.

Some do. It depends on how many seniors they lose to December graduation usually.

Any word on how successful spring recruitment was? I'm curious!
