Questions/My Potential Third Recruitment

I have some questions that my Greek Life office is unable to answer and was wondering if anyone could give their opinion.

First off, I'm a Sophomore with a 2.6 GPA (I had a very rough freshman year). I went through recruitment my Freshman year and was dropped because my grades were too low. So I took a bunch of summer classes and then rushed again at the beginning of this year with a 2.2 GPA. I was given a snap bid by a sorority that 2 of my closest friends had just disaffiliated with due to a scandal (and I didn't click with any of the girls there... I was dropped by them on the first day!)

Anyway, I am a determined girl. Most of my friends are in the Greek system and I'm constantly at my friends sorority functions, the occasional dinner, etc. I know that I would be a good fit in the Greek life at my school, and I want to rush a third time.

I understand that this could be looked down upon, but I'm wondering - would this look bad? I have many connections at our sororities that I've made since the last time I rushed, but I'm scared to look desperate.

Could anyone give me some advice or share their viewpoint?

Depending on where you attend school, your gpa may still be too low to make you a good candidate for recruitment. You don't say much about the campus you are on, but yes, a third time through can also be a negative.

I'm assuming you declined the bid? What kind of advice are you asking for?

When are you considering going through? As a junior, you're going to need a much higher GPA and great extra-curricular involvement at almost every school.

The search function is your friend! Your situation is likely not as unique as you believe it to be.

I'm assuming she goes to the University of Colorado because of the "buffs" in her username.

First off, I'm a sophomore, not a junior, and at my school there are quite a few sophomores who get bids.

Second, I didn't decline the bid. The sorority called me about two hours before bids were being handed out and said that they had a bid for me if I wanted it. I was in class at the time and obviously couldn't answer my phone. When I got out of class (after bid day activities had started) I called our greek life office and they informed me that the sorority hadn't technically offered me a bid and that I was not considered to have rejected a bid.

Third, I'm very involved with my school. I'm a tour guide, part of the choir and part of the social chair for school events.

So the overall consensus is that rushing again would be a bad idea? I was kind of expecting that :(

Well I read on the page that the average grade requirement is a 2.5, and you're at a 2.6 That couple with your class standing can be detrimental against you, and hopefully you'll do well this spring. This is unrelated to the OP, but this form is very poorly written. If I am a former member as an alumna, how could I write a rec as that requires me to be a member in good standing? Also some groups allow collegians to write recs for PNMs, not everyone rec writer is an alumna.

There was a woman at my school who went through recruitment at least 5-6 times. While her grades were stellar, she was the awkward type (bad hair, braces, coke bottle bottom glasses, hyena laugh, and a little bit of drool when she talked - which was constantly). I say 5-6 times because she went through both formal and informal recruitment for three years. No bid.

Then, a colony was being formed on campus. By this time, she no longer had the braces, and so, the drool. Somehow, she had lost that laugh, wore contacts, and found a new hairstylist. The chapters who had seen her 5-6 times still "saw" her with the original description - but would the new colonizers? She interviewed, and became a founder of that chapter. Actually, she became President of the new chapter! Why do I mention this?

It depends what you are looking for, how much rejection you can take, and how much you're willing to work for it.

There are no perfect people. None. Everyone here had at least one drawback during recruitment, whether or not she cares to mention it. Prove that your grades have greatly improved, even if you have to say, "I really blew it my freshman year, and spent the last year getting back on track. I WILL continue to improve my GPA!" Make sure it's the ONE thing that's holding you back (no drool, or frizzy hair!), and be seen studying by as many GLO people you know. Hold your head up high, whether or not you're invited to any parties. You will probably still be cut heavily, but it's how YOU handle it that matters.

If worse comes to worse, there may be a colony in the future. One way or another, you will have learned one of the most basic survival skill of life - grace under duress. I wish you the best in finding yourself.

I know some groups classify whether an alumna is in good standing - some have yearly alumna dues that must be paid (or other requirement) to stay in good standing. Also, some groups say you need to graduate in good standing to be an alumna in good standing. If you graduate but still owe your chapter/the sorority a semester of dues, you wouldn't be in good standing until it was paid. I think that's what it's getting at there.

Yes, I would definitely take a shot at it. What do you have to lose? Keep working on your grades, and make sure that everything else is in order.
