CollegeACB effect?

Hi guys, so I lurk way more than I post, but I did a search and it looks like no one else has had this problem yet.

I belong to a chapter with solid numbers and a very strong sisterhood. That's the good news. The bad news is that we don't "go out" as much as other sororities and have been getting trashed on this new "juicycampus" clone, collegeacb. I'm really scared. I'm worried that PNM's will read this and will go into recruitment having already made up their mind. Our school already had a chapter close down recently. I don't want that to happen to us.

How can we fight this? I honestly believe I'm in the best sorority on campus. We have no drama and we're all really good friends. How can we keep the PNM's around long enough to notice this if they're just going to go by what they read on these trash sites?

Has anyone had this problem? Do you think this site will have less of an effect than I'm thinking?
Thanks!

I know at my school everyone knows CollegeACB is a bunch of stupid gossip. I personally only read it to make sure my friends and I aren't on there or to read the stupid stuff people have cooked up this time. I'm going into spring informal recruitment soon and I know that it is hard to block the stereotypes of collegeacb but, at the same time, I know it is stupid and a gossip mill where everyone wants to hurt everyone else in a hope to get ahead in the "rankings".
Hopefully people at your school will not believe this site is correct and will acknowledge it for what it is.

At my school we also had juicy campus and had many PNM's ask us questions such as, "we heard you don't party a lot" or "i heard XYZ and YGS don't get along." you need to shrug those statements off and say that it is only a gossip page, and they should go to the house they feel the most comfortable in. Even though the only bad comments were we don't party that much, we still got an incredible new member class! In a way it can also be positive! Just remind your chapter that this will probably come up during recruitment with PNM's and not to bash other houses, but to just brush it off and not attack the site or other chapters!

if you have any other questions feel free to PM me =]

JuicyCampus was huge at my school, and now CollegeACB seems to be just as popular. I honestly don't think it has really impacted my chapter specifically. And from what I've observed, it doesn't seemed to have made a difference in other chapters (as far as recruitment goes) either. Chapters that were struggling before CollegeACB don't seem to be doing any worse now that that website is around.

This.

Also, I think most people recognize that CollegeACB is a bunch of silliness/stupidity and that there will always be people yapping about rumors. Plenty has been said about every chapter at my school, but judging from everyone's successful recruitment, CollegeACB was a non-issue.

If a woman is not interested in your house because of gossip she read on the internet, you really don't need her in your sorority. You sound like you belong to a great house, and I don't think the website will hurt you. :)

An update:
We had the best return rate we've had in years! All my favorite girls came back!
I guess those sites really are just nasty gossip after all. Thanks, guys :)

FSUZeta 01-18-2010 01:56 PM

that's great. please keep us updated.

Update: Quota was 35. We got 27. So much for return rates. At least the girls we got are totally unsuperficial.

I doubt it had much, if at all, to do with that website though. Most GDIs have never heard about that website.

quite a few people on my campus use that site, and there are some really nasty things posted on there about certain (actually most) chapters. I'll admit I had some preconceived notions, but anybody trashing a sorority on an anonymous gossip site needs to seriously reevaluate themselves. Also, most those people know maybe five girls in each sorority--not much to go off of. It's sad, but some people do listen to these ignorant, petty few, and some awesome sororities are hurt in the process. Or maybe helped because in the end they get the girls who are too smart to believe the hype.

FSUZeta 01-25-2010 08:54 AM

so what plans does your chapter have to recruit up to quota?

in my experience, sites like juicycampus and collegeabc have more power to damage the reputations of individuals rather than houses. you're walking around campus interacting with people from all the houses every day and that helps negate any huge claims against groups as a whole while rumors about particular people you don't really know can be really damaging!

I absolutely agree. Most people regard posts criticizing houses as coming from catty girls who are jealous or trying to bring up their own house (at least at my school), whereas individual attacks seem a bit more substantiated, although they can be just as malicious and false.

Haha, I wish that were the case at my school, but it's basically high school redux here. Freshmen choose based on what they hear, not whom they meet. It's not a good system :(
