Transfer Rush at Kentucky
Im planning on possibly transferring to the University of Kentucky. If you are attractive, have rec letters, pretty good grades (over a 3.0) and activities (I want to also join the equestrian club and possibly FCA- Fellowship of the the Christian Athletes) would it be possible to get into a good house rushing as a transfer?

No one can tell you for certain if you'll get a bid or not, but I have some advice:
I wouldn't judge the sororities as "good" or "bad" when you don't even actually go to school there. Also, I would imagine that Kentucky is primarily a freshman-dominated recruitment, meaning that most of the PNMs participating are freshmen with stellar GPAs and stacked resumes from high school. Also consider the fact that many of the other upperclassman PNMs have the added benefit of knowing sorority members before recruitment. That's something I find important to getting a bid at a school like UK as soph or junior. As a transfer, you need to be meeting and forming relationships with sorority members because I can guarantee you that the other upperclass girls will have that. If you're an upperclassman, it is probably a good idea to keep an open mind. You can make all the pre-determined judgements you want, but eho's to say that that the chapters you think are the "best" or "good" will invite you back? |
Well Ive looked on the site and couldnt really find one on that topic specifically related to UK, and I know alot of them say the same thing "keep an open mind, grades up, good recs ect" but I was hoping someone from the UK Greek system or who is familar with it could specifically answer my question, b/c colleges differ so greatly when it comes to the Greek system.and i should have reworded that I didnt mean "good" I meant respected, involved on campus, good grades, wins philanthropy's ect.

Those PNMs who are "in the know" at that school likely already know which have the "best" reputations anyway. If you're planning on trnasfering there, you should ask someone you know who is already attending UK (as opposed to people on the internet). |
No one can specifically answer your question since no one here knows you. We may know all there is to know about UK recruitment, but without knowing you it's impossible to say whether you will get into a [good] house.
Even if you look great on paper, you could have the personality of a door knob (a trait that would most likely impact your recruitment). |

Often, PNMs ask"I have a 3.9, recs for every house, and I'm in 2 clubs, am I going to get a bid?" Those are just the tangible, standard things that most PNMs will have. I'd imagine at UK, all PNMs have good grades, recs, and at least one or 2 activities." I'd also imagine that most of them are reasonably pretty (so appearance isn't a factor). To be honest, there's more to it than that. The thing that gets most overlooked are conversation skills and other connnections. With all PNMs being equal (with respect to grades, recs, activities), there's got to be something else that makes a chapter take interest in a girl. More often than not, it's the conversations she has with sorority members and connections she makes with them. Also important with upperclassmen is knowing girls in chapters. I mean, if two upperclassmen have equal grades, recs, etc. I tend to think that the chapter is more likely to take a chance on Julie Junior who has relationships with 3 sisters from SGA and has class with another 2 (who like her alot), than say Tina Transfer whom they know nothing about except her stats on paper. All this to say that there's more to it than grades and recs when it comes to a competitive environment like UK. |
Transfer will depend on how many credits you have and what your class standing is. Most PNm's that get bids at UK are freshman and sophomores. Juniors depend on the chapter but is certainly possible. Seniors are hard but I do know of one that went through recruitment as a senior with two years left and she got a bid to a top house (but she also knew people well in that house).
Grades and class standing are the largest reason people get cut and cut heavily during recruitment at UK. It is probably the least competitive of all SEC schools, but is competitive. You will need recommendations to all houses. Having said that it is worth noting that people with recommendations may still be cut after the first day of parties and do not guarantee an automatic invitation to the next round, especially with the top houses (and I will not reveal who those are so dont ask). |
thankyou theta Princess . I'm sorry I should have specified I am 20 and will go in the fall with credits that will qualify me as a sophmore. I am not worried about the top house I would just like to get into a sorority that is respected around the campus as sweet involved girls who are active around the campus and with philanthropies! Everyone comes on here and tears me apart but I'm just really nervous and wanted info I'm a small town girl moving to a big school in another state not knowing a soul and never having been away from home at age 20!
So you are saying that it is possible for houses to extend bids to sophmores ? Does it happenoften or is it rare? I just know at some of the SEC schools I wouldn't have a snowballs chance in he'll lol |

All of the sororities are great at UK really. Maybe one is struggling just a tad, but not anything major. Sorority life at UK is pretty strong. They added a new chapter to campus this past fall and are adding another chapter in a couple of years which means overall the system is strong and healthy. All of the philanthropies of the chapters are highly respected and noteworthy. Some of the events may be more popular than others but they are great philanthropies none the less. I assume you are transferring in from a community college in Kentucky? |
Yes ma'am. And not a cc in Kentucky, one in another state in the deep south. I was planning on finishing my assosiates or two year degree at jr college but I'm just so bored with the small town life, I want out and Kentucky seemed perfect because of my love for horses and it is basically one of the horse capitals of the world! It Also seems to have a great equine management/ science program. And yes I read about alpha phi! That's exciting!
And that's great about the philanthropys, I just can hope to rush an involved sorority with a good sisterhood because that's what it's about right ? : ) I was just nervous that as a sophmore, I would maybe only get invited back to one house IF THAT and that the house might not even be a good fit for my personality or have anything in common or connect. What do you reccomend going through rush- good gpa, recs, positive attitude ect? Also I know at some Sec schools it's hurts a pnm if there not from the In state is this true? |

All of the sororities at UK are involved in their own philanthropies as well as participate in others with great sisterhoods. Sisterhood too is what you make it. Dont forget it is a two way street. |
Thank both y'all, Theta Princess and KSUViolet for taking the time to give me advice it was very kind . The link is very helpful thank you and the advice to get involved in more community service is a great idea because Ive been meaning to volunteer at the no kill animal shelter for a while and I think now would be the perfect time to get involved seeing as I have all spring and summer till I transfer to UK. As for musical talent, I play guitar and sing country music : ) . As for athletic abilities I really have none to speak of, I ride horses if that counts and have been since I was knee high to a pigs eye. I cheerleaded in high school and danced ballet for 12 years but not that that really matters anymore now that I am out of high school lol.
