Tennessee men's basketball players Tyler Smith, Cameron Tatum, Brian Williams and Melvin Goins were arrested after a traffic stop around noon on Friday. The players are facing misdemeanor weapon and drug charges, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. "We take these matters very seriously," UT coach Bruce Pearl said in a statement released by UT. "We are still gathering information. Once the appropriate authorities have provided us with all of the facts, we will act accordingly.” Smith is a senior and the starting power forward, Tatum is a redshirt sophomore who has started on the wing, Williams is a junior backup center and Goins is a junior college transfer who is the backup point guard. Smith has started all 12 games and is averaging 11.7 points per game and 4.7 rebounds. Tatum has started 6 games and is averaging 8.7 points per game. Williams has averaged 5.9 points and 5.4 rebounds off the bench. Goins has made one start and is averaging 6.1 points. The 14th-ranked Vols (10-2) flew back from Memphis Thursday night after defeating the Tigers 66-59. UT's next game is Wednesday at Thompson-Boling Arena against Charlotte. More details later online and in Saturday's News Sentinel. |
I think it may be safe to say they can kiss their college basketball careers goodbye in addition to any NBA dreams they had...I hope the bad choice they made here was worth it.

It's been a tough year for Tennessee...first their football players arrested for attempted robbery http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4647094, now their basketball players arrested for this. But I agree, in the sports, if you're good enough, just about anything gets swept under the rug.

Sad for Tennessee, especially after the robbery arrest of the football players in the fall. I am sure there will be a fair investigation (like the robbery where one was unaware of the attempt) and those at fault will be gone. One of the problem with young athletes at every school, is many have not been held accountable earlier in life because of their skills. Some have grown up in areas where riding around with guns in the car is acceptable. You can take the kid away from the gangs but it is hard to get the gang mentality out of the kid. I hope that all of these young men will use this as a wakeup call.

so far Tyler Smith, the only senior, is the only player to be dismissed. the other 3 are still indefinitely suspended. i think if Smith beats the charges (misdemeanors) or pleads it down he could still play professionally.
hostesses, football players' armed robbery, and basketball guns n weed. it's a good thing Tennessee beat KU. that was a little daylight. it helped their recruiting for next year, too. parents were probably, and are still, thinking twice about sending their kids to Knoxville. side note: my friends and i have circled the UK-UT games on the schedule. John Wall is gonna fuck around and get a triple double. |
