Avatar was Meh

I won't spoil it for you but I saw it and while the CGI and 3D was cool...the story was tepid. If you have seen Dances with Wolves, Last Samurai, or A Man Called Horse, you saw this.

7 out of 10 stars.

Once others comment, I will post further...and please post SPOILER ALERT before you give away key moments of the flick.

I'm the same way. The visual effects were absolutely mindblowing. I wish I had seen it in an IMAX. Visually, best movie made yet. Storywise, not so much.

moe.ron 12-23-2009 12:43 PM

felt the same way. visually amazing . . . story predictable and good call on the comparison to those other movies.

xomanadaxo 12-23-2009 01:02 PM

My friends nicknamed it "Dances with Smurfs" :p

Personally, I really enjoyed the storyline. But then again, I'm a sucker for any heroic plot that has a touch of romance.

I didn't think it was "meh" at all though...if for no other reason than the visuals were mindblowing. If you're going to see it, see it in 3-D. For most people, the storyline alone is probably not worth the price of a ticket.

storyline

**SPOILER ALERT**

Man infiltrates indigenous people

Man learns indigenous people ways (also figures that they are more than just 'noble savages')

Man has evil friends that wants to relocate indigenous because they sit on something valuable.

Man falls in love with indigenous people (and their women)

Man becomes badass indigenous person and saves them all

The End

I thought the story was fine. But what really blew me away were the graphics. It could have honestly just been two and a half hours of no plot at all and I still would have been content.

CutiePie2000 12-23-2009 05:31 PM

The storyline can be summed up in that the theme is "colonialism".

A friend's nephew, who is a graphic artist, worked on this film. He has 3 Academy Awards for work in other films.

I really liked the movie. I was also thinking that it was along the lines of Dances with Wolves(but I really liked that movie as well). I love Sam Worthington, he did not disappoint:) I am going to see it again but this time on the Imax.

I just came back from seeing it with my mom. This is by far the best movie I have ever seen. This is the first movie I've seen with all of my interests (except my dollhouses) tied into one movie. I also loved the background scenes of the other planet and its moons it shared with Pandora. It reminded me a lot of Jupiter with its continuous strorm. Pandora was truely a paradise, and even looking at some places here on Earth show that at one time, our own planet was once a paradise. Oh, and we saw it in 3D. It made the special effects that much better. I have to see it again, and a definite buy on DVD. I loved it SO much.:):)

eta: and the military hardware that was used in the movie was the coolest. Oh, and some of the machines looked like futuristic Ospreys. So cool.

My thought was that the geeks have a new language to learn in addition to Klingon and Elvish.

I really have no interest at all in seeing this, but my daughter is insisting that we go see it "as a whole family" (which means, with the ex-husband in tow). I'm thinking maybe I'll nap through it. I'll let y'all know later what I thought.

DaemonSeid 12-27-2009 05:21 PM

dont snore too loudly

AGDee 12-27-2009 06:45 PM

You saw Dances with Wolves, I saw Pocahontas. I didn't snore, the special effects were good. I thought it was an enjoyable movie. I can't say "best movie ever" but it was good. I didn't cry. My daughter did, twice, both times that she saw it! I did lean over and ask her if it was almost over at one point because I was getting a little bored with it. It was just before the big stuff at the end, which I thought dragged on a little too long. It was a hit with the 13 year old son. My ex-husband said it was just anti-war, pro-environment propaganda. Since he's part of the Christian right, I pointed out that it had a strong religious aspect to it too and he agreed.
