Green to Greek

this may, or may not belong in a different forum, if so, hopefully you have responsible mods. i tried the search feature, this topic is too broad

Im attending LSU next fall.

however, im starting this spring semester at a "sister school" (LSU-A) that has a colony of a certain fraternity there. i want to rush this spring, and pledge/initiate at the sister school's colony. yes LSU has this fraternity there.

of course, when i transfer next fall, i assume my membership will transfer.

Questions:
1)are there any disadvantages to this?
2)how are transfers treated?
3)what is the main difference between responsibilities of a transfer 2nd semester member, to an original 2nd semester member?

Don't assume your membership will transfer. Transfer policies vary from org. to org. and and chapters may or may not accept transfer members.

This. It does indeed depend on the organization, but in most instances with which I'm familiar, it is not automatic. The new chapter has to approve the transfer, which it might not do for a variety of reasons.

Besides, when you get to LSU, you may discover that you really don't click with the guys in the chapter in question. (As far as that goes, when you get to LSU-A, the guys in the colony there might decide they don't click with you and not offer you a bid.)

If you're going to transfer anyway, you may as well wait until summer/fall. Do these guys at LSU-A a favor and don't even waste their time if you won't even be there more than one semester.

And this. If they know you're going to transfer, I'm not sure they'd want to give you a bid anyway. And if they don't know but realize after the fact that you intended to transfer all along, I'm guessing you won't be their favorite guy, which they may let their brothers at LSU know, leading to one of those reasons that the LSU chapter might not approve the transfer.

Wait until you get to LSU and then check out all of the fraternities with an open mind.

Not only that, depending on the colony timeline, you may not be initiated before you leave, and then the main campus chapter doesn't owe you squat since you're not a brother. I'm guessing that the IFC is the same as NPC in if you transfer schools while you're still a pledge, your pledge is automatically broken and you're considered independent.

^^^ Very good point.

Point: In some IFCs, a member initiated into a colony may come back later and be initiated into the fraternity, even if they are not an active member when they received the charter (due to transfer or other reason). As long as they were a member in good standing of the colony when they left.
