Pledge Class Namesakes
Hey everyone! I'm curious to know how different fraternities /sororities name their pledge classes. For example the Kappa Upsilon chapter of Alpha Phi Omega here at East Carolina combines the first letter of the names of our President, Vice-President, and Pledgemaster (in that order) This semester it's Kappa Lambda Mu (Kevin, Lambert, Mitchell) What about yours?

My chapter wasn't quite that creative: we just name them in order of the Greek alphabet. My pledge class was Alpha Kappa, the one after mine was Alpha Lambda, then Alpha Mu, etc. This spring class that just pledged is the Beta Beta class. God, I'm old.

Oficially this is the way the Iota Rho Chapter at Florida State does it. Pledge lines in the fall take on the name of the brother nationals is choosing to honor. Pledge lines in the spring honor someone from our chapter. It's usually a brother from the past who's made a considerable contribution to Alpha Phi Omega and the Iota Rho chapter.

This is why I say I feel like I'm in a different world up here. At least at my school (university of Toronto) we don't name our pledge classes. Do any of you other Canuks name your pledge classes?
I am always interested to know whether these things are unique to my campus (or chapter for that matter) or if it's a national thing. Does everyone in the U.S. chapters give their pledge classes names? |
We don't name our pledge classes either.

We don't name our AM classes. I'd say it probably has something to do with separation of classes.

We typically name them after someone who has done something significant for our chapter/in the organization. Mine was Paul Fauntz--Spr 99

ours was xi fall 1998 and i am a 12.

Our classes are numbered (as in the "25th class of mu-psi" or whatever), and the class names are decided on by the pledge class - almost like a 'secret motto' for each class, before they learn the ritual motto. For example, our class was UISMP - and for us, naming pledge classes is left up to the individual chapter.
|
Our first pledge class was Alpha Omega, our second was Beta Psi, third Gamma Chi...see the pattern? But after Lambda is starts back over at Alpha and the second letter goes in reverse...it's kinds of strange.
My pledge class was Beta Nu-Fall 1996 Our pledge classes are all on our website if you are interested www.geocities.com/alpha_theta_chi Have a nice day http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif [This message has been edited by AOX81 (edited March 20, 2001).] |
Ours are just by the Greek Alphabet. I am an Eta. When they get through the entire alphabet, then we start with Delta Alpha, through the alphabet, then Phi Alpha, through the alphabet, then Epsilon Alpha, and through the alphabet. I guess after that they'll go to Alpha Alpha. I know they just took the Omega class, which means double letters start next semester!

This is one of the things that irk me a little. We were told that naming pledge classes was HAZING. Do you believe that! Something about seperating and categorizing the "new members." Anyway, I think some of the old chapters that have been naming classes forever still do. However, we were re-colonized in 1990 and not a single pledge class since has been named.
|
Likewise, my chapter does not name our pledge classes. Personally I'm thankful for that because it is so much easier saying that so-and-so was from the class of 98 or whatnot...rather than trying to remember back to what their name was.
I did like the idea that DreamCatcher's fraternity uses. I think that would be more meaningful, but yet hard to decide! ------------------ What do you get when you cross and Alpha Omicron Pi and a Sigma Phi Epsilon? A beautiful Chi Omega!!! |

We started our pledge classes with the Greek alphabet and still do even though they are now Associate Members. Each class made a large paddle with their designation on it. As the Alums come back for functions, they find their paddle with their name on it and show their family in a proud manner.
