Lavalier
I'm a new initiate, and I am wondering..... when is it inappropriate to wear my lavalier? I have been invited to a frat formal and though I'd like to wear my lavalier, I'd also like to have a glass of wine or two with dinner. Should I leave it at home?

As for the formal, why not go with a simple pearl necklace? I wouldnt wear your lavalier just in case you get too intoxicated lol. |
Keep in mind that, if you are underage, you may be violating one or more of your organizations rules.

If it's really just going to be wine with dinner, I would say it's probably okay....if there is a chance it could be more than that throughout the evening, leave it at home.
If you wouldn't do it in a lettered shirt, don't do it wearing your lavalier. |
We are not allowed to wear our letters if we are underage and drinking. Also please use the term "Fraternity". Frat is considered derrogatory

Conversely, are you supposed to you wear your letters out drinking when you're 21? Probably not. |

Honeysaurus here... We considered our lavaliers casual, too casual for a formal. But we also knew to tuck it under our shirts if we happened to consume too much.

I agree with honey, I wouldn't wear a lavalier at a formal not because of the letters issue, but because 1) most formal-dress necklines look better with pearls or something and 2) they are "everyday" necklaces, not for special occasions. If you're at a really small school everyone knows what group you're in so wearing or not wearing letters in any form is a moot point. |
