PR Ideas

Last night, my sisters elected me as our chapter's newest VP Public Relations. I'm super excited about this new position and the possibilities it holds. I was wondering if any of you had suggestions for ways of getting the KD name seen on campus other than letters. Letter shirts are wonderful, but I can only do laundry so often! :) Two of the other houses on campus wear safety pins on their jeans with pearls (GPhiB) or a washer (DG). These are great PR because it's a subtle, unifying way of showing your affiliation, regardless of what outfit you're wearing.
So...do any of you ladies have any ideas like this? I was thinking of doing something with a nautilus, or possibly three stars. But any symbol is wonderful...we love them all! :)

I love the nautilus symbol. It's so unique. Three stars is good too. Maybe a rose? BTW, how do you make these things? Are they like craft projects? Gold stars would be easier to find.

Whatever you end up making I'm sure it'll look great. It's such a cute idea for when you're not in badge attire.

I feel like the nautilus is one of our less-used symbols, but it's one of my favorites! We were thinking of making the pins as a sisterhood. The Gamma Phi Betas on our campus have special safety pins that don't have the loop at the bottom of them, so the pearls can slide around to the closed side, rather than the open side where they might fall off! I'll have to ask my friend where they buy theirs.

I talked to a few more of my sisters about it, and we like the idea of doing three stars, especially since that gives a lot more room to make it your own with different colors/styles of star beads. We're known for being a house with a lot of different types of girls and a lot of individuality. Using your own favorite colors for the stars, rather than restricting it to our beloved green, white and pink (our chapter color) would accentuate our individuality, but still unify us in all the important ways! Plus, you could make them match your outfit, which is always good, too! ;)

I'm having so much fun coming up with ideas for this semester! Any inspiration is always appreciated, so thank you!

Yes, the nautilus is definitely ritual.

The Kappa Delta website states that our symbols and mascots are the nautilus shell, the dagger, katydid, and teddy bear.

Sorry! I meant that even though the nautilus, like the dagger and stars, could be displayed, you can't really discuss their origin or what they mean.

Thanks ladies, glad I asked! (I changed the post, just to be safe) I'm still pretty new to a lot of this stuff, but I'll try to keep my mouth shut from now on :)

Anyway...back to the original discussion. Any cute PR ideas? :D

I don't know if this counts as "not letters," as you mentioned in the original post, but what about totes? There are cute ones in the KD Boutique, but I don't know if gals in your chapter are into them. The Boutique also has "I [heart] KD" buttons you could pin onto backpacks, or you could have buttons made with a phrase your chapter likes.

We've got lime green totes =) But I love the button idea!

I've been thinking about your PR question for campus visibility, xo.

I don't think there are any sororities on your campus that have a white rose, so playing up white roses in a pin, button or accessories would be cute and appropriate. Some ideas: white silk rose pinned to backpacks, a white rose button, black cord bracelets with a small silk rose attached.

Also green is good, because it is not a common sorority color and isn't duplicated on your campus. I don't really understand the current trend of sororities using every color under the sun EXCEPT their own colors, so I say, play up green! But then I'm old school. Some Green ideas: green beads on a safety pin, (but since other glos are already doing this, it's not my fave) or green/green and white beaded bracelets, a green beaded dangle with an appropriate charm (star, rose, dagger, teddybear) to pin on backpacks. There is a lot of cute beading material available, and it is not too expensive if you buy in bulk and have a beading session.

One advantage to something pinned to the backback is that it wouldn't clash with your clothes, and it would always be visible when you went to class.

I know of one chapter that had a bid day motto, "There's something about the green ones". What about passing out green suckers some day on campus? Maybe one day during finals week?

I have to admit, I don't get the DG washers...... Water reference? Washers/water?

Let us know what ya'll do and have fun!

What great ideas, Katmandu! Thanks a ton...I really like the idea of the bracelets. My sisters and I have actually been playing around with the idea of doing something for our backpacks, and you gave me some great ideas to bring to our next discussion! I really wish we could use the dagger in some way, but there is a secret society on our campus who uses a sword toothpick on a safety pin (worn on pants leg) to notate membership, and we don't want our use of the dagger to be confused with it.

The meaning of the DG washers is secret, but I've heard some pretty cool rumors about its origin. Out of respect for the DGs I won't post what I've heard...I'd hate to have inadvertently discovered the actual meaning behind it and reveal their secrets! Suffice to say some of the rumors I've heard about its purpose indicate that it has a very cool meaning behind it. I'd love to find something meaningful for my KD sisters to wear!

Pardon the crash
I wouldn't use the three stars. A lot of sororities and fraternities have stars as symbols or parts of badges, crest etc. I would try to do something more unique that makes KD stand out.

Hey xo,

I just found something you might like on ebay. They're small silver roses with a loop at the top. Maybe you could all use the rose as the starter bead and then do three stars in whatever style each person likes. ???

I think they're really cute roses and if you take a close look you'll notice that they're done in a spiral like the nautilus. They're sold in bulk at 5 cents a piece.

I'll post a pic in a minute. BRB

Leslie Anne those are fantastic!!!! Thank you so much! I'm printing the pic off now to show to my sisters in the morning...Awesome! :) :)

LOVE the roses. Imagine that with some "pearl" and green beads or dangling from a green and white ribbon. Love, love, love it. (Now I sound like Teresa on RHW of NJ)

You will really be able to do something cute with those. Now, get to work! Show us pics!
