Not sure what to do
 

Hello,
I hope i'm posting this in the right place.. I will be transferring to Montclair State next year and i really want to be in a sorority but heres my problem..

I'm going to be a 23 year old sophmore i know in other posts that for most sororites age dosn't matter but i will have to commute and i have a 9 month old baby

I know i have alot on my plate but joining a sorority has been a lifelong dream. I dont want to give up my dreams because i have a baby.Do you think it will make a difference i have a child. And advice or comments will help

Some stories...

1. A few years ago a sister told me a story about how she had a chapter sister that actually had like a 3-4 year old when she joined ADPi.

2. Back in 2001, when I was at ASU, I met one of the newest Alpha member (on 9/11 ironically). Very sweet girl. We got to talking and she told me that she was like 23-25 years old and she had just started college. My sisters (I didn't affliate with that ASU chapter), obviously saw something in her and didn't look at her age. She was an amazing asset to the chapter.

I give these "stories" saying that it can happen, it just truly depends on the climate of the campus. Plus, it depends on the chapter and if they are "willing" to accept that there will be times that your child will come first in your life and not the chapter.

Not knowing much about your campus or the greek life on it, I say go for it. But be honest and open with the chapters. They are either going to want you for you or not and if they don't, well look at this way, it's their loss not yours :D

No matter what happens, you have been given an amazing gift that to some people, is a dream in and of itself.

I wouldn't think being a 23 year old commuting sophomore would be a problem at Montclair. The biggest obstacle you will face in getting a bid will be the fact that you have a child. Also, if you are not a full time student, that will prevent you from getting a bid, period.

By all means, go through recruitment. Just make sure the women in the chapters know you have a 9 month old. You don't want to omit that tidbit, get a bid and then create drama and resentment when the chapter finds out.

Ask about the time committment, how much is required and how much is optional. However, sorority membership is about so much more than the bare minimum. You also have to ask yourself how much you'll be able to relate to a bunch of 18-22 year olds who don't have a baby to take care of, women who are losing sleep over who they should invite to dated party instead of loing sleep over a crying baby.

I can't imagine juggling sorority membership, maintaining a good GPA taking 12 or more credits, and taking care of a 9 month old.

sororities are a huge time committment-so is raising a baby and so is being a student. in addition, sororities are a considerable monetary committment too. please carefully consider how much free time and extra cash you have , so that you don't get overextended with your time and your money.
