Spring rush/letter of rec
I am a sophomore at Texas a&m and i have decided to go through spring rush. When i asked about spring rush the person in charge said that only 3-4 sororities participate in it, so i know that can hinder me in some ways. But i figure i might as well do it now and if i click with one of the sororities that has it and get a bid, that great but if not try again as a junior and rush in the fall (which might also hinder me since i will be two years older than most of the pledges)
i keep reading about how you need letters of recommendation from panhellenic from your home town or people that have been in the sorority before. i dont know how to go about doing this and i dont know anybody that has been in a chapter that we have at a&m. so how improtant are the letters of rec, do i need them? Also would it "improve" my chances of getting in since i'm already hindered because i'm a sophomore? |

*I can't speak to whether they can trump being a sophomore (because I am not a member of an A&M chapter). *I'd suggest contacting your local alumnae panhellenic for help with recs. I know that they primarily help girls get recs for formal recruitment, but I would contact the one closest to you and see if they can assist you. There is a list of them by state here: http://npcwomen.org/alumnae-panhellenics/directory.aspx |
Have you been on campus for a year already? Do you know some of the girls in the houses who are participating in spring rush?
Also, I may be misinterpreting your question, but you do not need your rec letters to come from alums of those particular chapters. In other words,a kappa kappa gamma from the University of Arkansas can write your rec to A&M. Are you from Texas? If so, you have highly organized Panhellenic Alumnae Associations around the state. Definitely get in contact with one in your home area to let them know you will be participating in spring rush. And, finally, yes, my gut instinct is that your shot at pledging will occur this spring. I do not think very many juniors pledge at A&M. And one last point : read as much as you can about recruitment (especially tips on conversation, etc) on GC. Like anything else you would participate in, educate yourself on the process. |
I went ahead and looked up Panhellenic from back home (El Paso, Texas) and registered with them, so it said i should receive an email in about three days. Do you know how they write the letter's of rec or what they base it on?
I have been going to a&m for a year but i dont know too many people in any of the houses and i have not heard of anyone doing spring rush yet. And i'm not sure about alum letter, but it sounded like some one that was in that chapter had to write you one but i'm not too sure about this. So if my sister-in-law was an alpha xi delta could she write me something even though we dont have an alpha xi delta chapter at a&m? |
Maybe your sister-in-law knows someone in other groups that could help. I know at A&M some chapters will take a few girls in the spring to be at chapter total. Very privately and usually girls they already know. I don't know how formal all the groups really go (Like letting Panhellenic know to advertise they are having a Spring recruitment) It varies from year to year depending on how many the chapters have graduate in January or how many are studying abroad or on internships. Your best bet is between now and Winter break get to know as many girls as you can that are in chapters. They tend to focus on the girls they know something about if they have openings in the Spring.

Your alumnae panhellenic will probably ask you to fill out a form, send a transcript and resume' - they will then share that information with their members, who MAY then write a recommendation.
It would also be a good idea to have your mom ask her friends if they are NPC members or if they know any NPC members. You'd be surprised how many women in your mom's, aunt's, teacher's circles turn out to be NPC members. Good luck! Hope you find your home. |
