General Thank You to This Forum
I just wanted to say thank you to this forum. I found this site a quite a while back when my daughter first expressed an interest in joining a sorority. I had never been in one (I was involved in other things in college as was her father and Greek life just wasn't an interest for either of us although I had friends who were in sororities). As a matter of fact no member of our family had been involved in them in anyway, so we were operating in the dark.
Her first year of college she was heavily involved in another school activity (cheerleading actually) and she went to a college where lots of people from her HS ended up, so she originally didn't have an interest in Greek life, but throughout the year she made a lot of friends who were involved and ended up dating a boy in a fraternity so she indirectly became pretty involved. She saw some things in it she wanted. This year she transferred to another school in our state (we moved to another state after she graduated HS), and decided she wanted to rush - particularly since she really knew no one at the school and felt it would be a good way to get involved in campus life. I don't think her school has an especially competitive rush, but we came on here all the time and did a lot of research, so she knew, as a sophomore, it might be more difficult for her. Still, she came on here a lot, looked at the advice that was given to others, and went in with an open mind and a clear head about what she was looking for in a house. She just went through formal recruitment and as you can tell from my username she just pledged AXO. She loved it and was beyond thrilled to get a bid. I think I have the happiest child currently attending an American University. She's a 20 year old girl so that's always a day to day thing but right now she's floating. Anyway, as her mom I just wanted to say thank you. Since I knew nothing about how things work in the Greek system there was very little I could do but support her and wish her the best. Having this site really helped us both. :) |
What a nice first post!

I wish I had written this.
I never had the opportunity to be in a sorority and I am thrilled with my daughter's happy experiences. I have also referred several friends to this site as their daughter's approach college and they have found it very helpful as well. Thank you. |
I am glad your daughter found her home:)

Thank you everyone.
I talked to her today and asked how it was going. She told me, "Mom, I wasn't sure how much I believed this, but they're right. The process really does work. I feel like I am totally in the right place with girls that just fit me. These are the girls that if I just met them, without recruitment, I still would have picked them as friends." The only hard part is that she was also on a sports team at her school, and this week she talked to her coach and told her she was going to have to let that go. She just didn't feel that time wise she could do justice to both and still keep her grades up. She had joined the team because, again, she felt like it would be a good way to get involved and she didn't want to put all of her eggs in one basket (sorority) when she was a sophomore and knew there was a chance she wouldn't get a bid. It was hard because although she didn't actually like the sport much (she's good at it she just doesn't like it), she loved the girls on the team and the coaches, so she was pretty teary Friday, but she thinks she's making the best decision for her. Anyway, thank you all again. |
