Southern Swoop or FratShag

What do I tell the barber to achieve the "Southern Swoop" or the "FratShag" look?

srmom 10-06-2009 10:53 AM

haha - this is so funny, I didn't think it was a style. Either your hair will do it or it won't. We tease my son saying he has the "Alabama Swoop" ever since we watched that Hoover football show on MTV. He can't help it, his hair just grows that way and the longer it gets, the swoopier it gets.

It is irritating though to watch him swooping it all day long...

GQ had a blurb about this not long ago. It said go to your barber and tell him, "Take some off the sides and the back, but DON"T TOUCH THE BANGS, BRO!"

Why am I envisioning an early 80s Mike Score hairdo here?

Ah, Bama Bangs.

oh man, not again

I think the "frat shag" as you call it comes about from not saying anything to your barber. Ever. Because you don't go there, hence why your hair would be shaggy.

This is as bad as the guy who asked which brand of croakies are best. The ones they have at the place/time you get sunglasses maybe?

you could always take a photo in for the barber to see.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up...

Is that the hairstyle where the bangs are diagonal across the forehead, and the owner is always flicking his head to the side like he has Tourette Syndrome?

WinniBug, you're thinking of the Emo Swoop:

This dbag is probably more along the lines of what he's thinking:

Similar, I think- in the greater DC/Baltimore area that style with the bangs carefully directed across the forehead with the shaggy sides (not short, that would be mulletville!) is called a lacrosse boy shag, as it seems just about every guy lacrosse player in this area has it.

Think MTV's "Two-a-Days":

Yes, that's why I said earlier that it is really irritating watching my son "swoop" his hair all day, it's either that or it's in his eyes. Getting him to get a hair cut (except for special occasions) is out of the question - I've got bigger fish to fry ;)

But, it kind of reminds me of the do's back from my day where the guy would have "wings" and flip his hair back all day. I used to love those wings...

Perfect example of "wings" hairdo:

I just labored mightily to keep from spitting Cherry Coke Zero all over my computer. Fun-nee.
