Non-students?
 

My cousin attends a 2-year community college nearby a large 4-year university, and for whatever reason decided to attend fraternity rush there. Inexplicably, he wound up receiving a bid and is now pledging. The fraternity knows that he is not a student at their school.

Now, I don't want to name the fraternity or the school here in a public forum, but I cannot imagine that there is any social GLO that officially allows this? :confused: I've seen similar situations allowed in honorary orgs and other types of student organizations, and obviously there are city-wide chapters of some orgs which include multiple 4-year schools, but I have never heard of such a situation as my cousin's. Not being an expert on NIC fraternities, I don't want to tell him any incorrect information, but this all seems very sketchy to me from what I've heard so far.

Are you sure it is an NIC fraternity? I know some locals would allow that, but NICs won't allow you to recruit people from other universities.

I know that, personally, we won't take people from other schools even if they plan on transferring in or have a joint program with our school. We will let members stay active, though, if they transfer to a nearby school w/o a chapter.

One of my sorority sisters boyfriend's was a student of the 2 year school that had a satellite campus on our campus, and one of the fraternities gave him a bid. He "transferred" to our school the following semester, but he joined while he was technically a student of the 2 year school, and not the 4 year university.

From the organizations that I'm familiar with, the problem is that he is matriculated at a 2 year community college (rather than a 4 year college or university) and not that he does not attend the college or university where the chapter is chartered.

There are organizations that allow certain chapters to accept students from other schools (not to be confused with core chapters and citywide chapters). There are also chapters for some organizations that are allowed to accept graduate students.

I say that the organization knows better than outsiders do. :p That's with the assumption that the student and/or chapter did not lie on the paperwork. That also happens, unfortunately.

Actually happens alot. I know of a specific case at Auburn with NIC fraternities.

we've taken a few members out of the neighboring community colleges. ASU greek life allows this as long as they are enrolled in at least 1 credit hour at ASU, but in the past we have recruited some guys who were only at community college.

At the uni I go to 20% of membership can come from the local community college.
