A Playful recruitment story-09

Day 1

Hey guys. I’m going through recruitment at a relatively small school with a somewhat less competitive Greek system. I’ve staggered my posts so you can’t figure out where I go to school. I thought I’d share my recruitment story with you.
I’ll tell you that I have a pretty good idea of what each of the house’s overall reputations are, but I’m trying really hard not to let that color my feelings or my decisions, especially since I know that all the houses are full of nice, wonderful women, and no reputation car accurately represent a group.
There are three houses here, and I’m going to code them as playground equipment, as a throwback to when we were young and still got to enjoy recess.
The first house I went to was Swing set. I had heard a bit about this house, and wasn’t expecting to like it nearly as much as the others. I have a good number of friends in both of the other houses, but no good friends, and only one acquaintance in Swing set. Boy was I pleasantly surprised. I had a great time in this house. They did a sort of speed dating thing where we got a few minutes with a set of actives, then a bell rang and we got to talk to another few actives. It was a nice way to get to see a lot of the girls, even if the conversation was pretty basic.
The second house I went to was Slide. At this house I was picked up by one girl and stayed with her the whole time. It was kind of awkward, but we hit it off pretty well. We had good conversation, even if it lagged in a few places, but I kind of felt that talking to only one girl wasn’t a good way to get to know an entire house of women. But the girls I knew from this house all stopped by to say hi, which was nice.
The final house of the evening was Monkey Bars. This was a house that has a reputation most like my personality, but I’m trying to keep that out of my decisions. I liked the way they rotated at this house, it was somewhere between the other two. I got to talk to one girl for most of the party, and other girls rotated through our little clump. It was nice to get to talk to a lot of girls, but still get to have meaningful conversations with a few people. They also showed a slide show, which showed me some of the things they liked to do together. I really liked that there were a lot of pictures of a lot of different activities on there, from meeting, to a ski trip, and formals and themed parties. They seemed like a really close group of women.
I loved all the houses, and have no idea how I’m ever going to be able to whittle it down. My face hurts from smiling so much. I’m hoping that I get a more distinct feeling in the next few rounds.
Thanks for listening, and I’ll try to keep you posted.

Day 2
Hi there. I’m not sure if anyone is actually reading this or not, but I figured I’d keep going for a bit just in case.
On day 2 we had pretty much the same deal we had on day 1 (for all the first 3 rounds we all to go every house, then for pref night we go to 2).
Today we started at Monkey Bars. We went in and I was picked up by a girl who recognized me from something I do on campus. We sat down and started chatting. I was with her the whole time, while other women filtered in and out, and we talked and made crafts for their philanthropy. It kind of felt like being at home, I clicked well with the girls I talked to, and the conversation was really natural. They then gave a quick presentation on their philanthropy and academic. I really like that so far they’ve given a lot of good info as well as time to get to know the women. I also really like that they have the highest GPA, both at my school, and that they recently won some sort of national award for academics too. I’m a very academic person, so this was great. Plus, their philanthropy is one that I believe in.
Then we went to Slide. I was picked up by a woman who it just wasn’t flowing with. She was really nice, it just wasn’t quite right, but I was passed off and got to talk to 2 more great women who I clicked better with. Then we played a fun get to know you game with a ball (tossing it around and answering questions- there were only 8 or so PNMs my round). I liked that they were kind of goofy and didn’t mind being sort of awkward, but the woman who talked to me about their philanthropy (the first woman) didn’t seem too excited about it. That really bummed me out, since I’m really passionate about community service, and like the people I do it with to be too. But it might just have been her, or the fact that we weren’t clicking. I like this house a lot, but not as much as monkey bars. The other thought I do have is that this is the house you tend to see wearing their house stuff around campus, whereas the other two seem less into house pride. I kind of like the whole wearing letters or symbols, even if its little (like a necklace). I want to be proud to be a part of my house.
Our final stop was Swing set. This party was also kind of hard to get started. We were in big groups for the craft, which made it hard to have really personal conversations, but when they rotated, I got to talk to a few women who were great. We clicked right away and had some great conversation. I also got to ask about what they liked best about their sorority, and they said that they really liked how even beyond their organized events they all hung out together a lot. That’s really special to me, since I already have plenty of people I only really see at club meetings, I’m looking for something a little deeper in a sorority. The one problem is that there is one girl in this sorority that used to live on my hall and doesn’t like me at all. I’m not really sure why not, or if she could keep me out, but I wouldn’t want to go in with tension with a sister right off the bat, but at the same time, I don’t want to let one girl ruin the sorority for me. For the record, our sororities are pretty small (usually under 45) and there are only 40 PNMs going through, so one sister makes more of an impact than if I had 200 of them.

Summary: I’m totally loving recruitment, and am pretty sure that I’d be happy and could make a home at any of the houses, but am leaning towards Monkey Bars because it just kind of feels like home to me. Good thing I have another day of all three before I have to rank them, and then pref before I have to decide.
Any advice is encouraged. Thanks so much.
Oh, and if you think you know my school, please don’t put it on here, but you can PM me and I’ll tell you if you’re right or not.
Have a great night!

Day 3
Hi guys, sorry that its taken so long to get this up.
Night three, same drill. All three houses. Same order as night 2
Monkey Bars-Again, I really liked this houses message of sisterhood. They talked about cost too, which was about the same as all the sororities, but was very well explained. Again it felt good to be in here, though not nearly as comfortable as at the previous two parties.

Slide- This house impressed me a TON tonight. I got to meet some of the younger girls (before I had only met seniors and 1 junior), so meeting more juniors and a whole bunch of sophomores was really nice, these girls and I clicked well. The president stopped by to chat, and I asked her what was her favorite part of being a slide. She told me it was knowing that she had such a wonderful group of girls as a built in support structure. This really resonated with me.

Swing Set- This house was somewhat less impressive to me. They did a fun activity, and I liked that they were big into doing funky activities at each round, but once we sat down to talk, it really wasn’t there. The girls were all really nice, there was just no major comfort factor. I figured that I could make a home here, but I would have to work for it, unlike the other two where it came naturally.

At the end of the night, I had an easy time ranking Swing Set as 3rd, but a harder time with the other two. After a bit I decided that I fit best into the Monkey Bars, and ranked that 1st and slide second, hoping that I would be invited back to those 2 houses for pref and could buy some time to decide.
And then I waited for my invites.

Pref
I’ll just put the rest on here since it’s all over now and I don’t want to torture you all any more than necessary.
I only got one invite for prefs. I was invited back to Monkey Bars. This was somewhat disconcerting since just about everyone was invited back to 2 houses, but I was trying to keep in mind that each girl at the end can only join one sorority anyways, so one was all I really needed. I got ready.

Now, I recently injured my arm and up until this point I had been in a sling, but for tonight I was out of the sling but had this horrible medical tape all over my arm. There were no dresses that would cover it up, so I picked the one I felt most confident in and decided that it shouldn’t matter. I arrived, we lined up and walked to Monkey Bars.

This was the last party of the night , and while it was my first, it was everyone else in my groups second. From reading the posts here at GC I wasn’t surprised when I heard singing as they opened the doors, but I was definitely impressed with their singing abilities. There was a flower handed to each PNM as we walked in and we went with an active to the bigger room to move them all into a beautiful vase in the center then we all stood in a circle. Then they each said a brief statement about what being a Monkey Bar was. It was beautiful. Then we had chat time. It was great. I had the most comfortable conversation, and when girls switched in and out it felt perfect. I knew that this was my home, and really hoped that tonight went well. They gave us themed dessert which was delicious, and then one of the officers read a beautiful poem. We chatted some more and then the president took us all upstairs and talked to us a bit about what it meant to her, and when we came downstairs the girls were all holding candles and singing again. I left feeling sure that I would be happy as a sister of Monkey bars. I signed my pref card, and called it a night.

Bid Day
The way we do bids is kind of different too. We pick them up from our campus center and have a few hours to think about it and call our RX with a decision, then later on in the day we all meet up and celebrate.

That was today, so while I have my bid, I haven’t been to the bid day activities themselves yet.

Obviously I got a bid to monkey bars and, drum roll please………

I am a very proud Kappa Kappa Gamma!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks to you all for the wonderful advice and support on these boards. I am so pleased to know that many of you will become my sisters and the rest of you are also involved in such a wonderful thing. Best of luck in all you do!!!!!
