Recruitment Disappointment
 

My daughter just transferred to Texas A&M from another college. She is a sophomore and was very excited about going through fall recruitment last week. However, she was devastated when she was released from recruitment due to her grades. There was a terrible misunderstanding. Her transfer GPA was 2.23 but her GPA from her summer classes at A&M were 3.8. We assumed (it was never explained) that the two GPAs would be averaged together to give her the GPA she needed to participate. Although she is an AXO legacy, she was open to any sorority. She is so disappointed because as a sophomore, she feels this was her only chance. What are her chances next year as an older PNM? I know that some sororities have Continuous Open Recruitment. How does she find out which sororities participate in COR and how does she let them know she is very interested? Please advise.

I rushed as a junior and they use to have an upperclassman quota-not sure if this still exists but she may want to call the greek life office to find out. I am sorry things did not work out for your daughter but if they still have an upperclassman quota (which pertained to juniors exclusively in my day) I would encourage her to try again. I can tell you that her grades will come into play again so I would tell her to make sure she does well the next 2 semesters in order to have the best chance possible. I hope this helps.

What would her new GPA have been? It may not have been enough. Also, the summer GPA may not have been ready by the time the rush GPA report was put together- perhaps she should've asked how that worked when she signed up for recruitment. How many credits did she take during the summer to get that 3.8? If her transfer GPA was 2.23 for about 30 credits (guessing at 2 semesters worth of credits) but she took, say 9 credits in the summer for getting that 3.8, it might not have been enough to bring up to an acceptable level for recruitment.

AXO82, sorry this is off track, but which college at A&M did your daughter transfer into with a 2.23? I have a good friend whose son was just denied transfer into A&M with a 3.4 (27 hours). Just curious to see if the intended major might have been the difference.

Agreed. It's the cummulative GPA that matters. So while a 3.8 for summer classes is something to be proud of, I doubt it would be enough credits to pull a 2.23 cummulative to above a 3.0.

It could have been that he didn't have 30 hours yet and therefore wasn't a sophomore. At many colleges, the required GPA to get in is lower for sophomores and even lower for juniors. Then you figure in the GPAs required for the various schools and the demand for those majors and it can get really confusing.

Does A&M do probationary admissions? Basically, she would have been admitted in the summer and her admission in the fall would depend on her success in summer school. In that scenario, she would have been able to attend A &M but her overall g.p.a. might not have been high enough for recruitment.
I'm sorry, AXO82. If some chapters do spring recruitment this year she may have a good shot if she gets her grades up.

I think some chapters may do COB at A&M. Overall, their quotas were down a bit this year so there may be chances there. She needs to go to the Greek Life Office and find out about her options.
Grades are a huge deal there and the groups use that to make their first set of "cuts" or releases. I know of a couple of other cases where girls were released last week because of grades.

carnation, A&M requires 24 hours to transfer in, but I think you are right about the demand for the various majors. I know it's that way at UT.

This boy I know is going to go to Blinn (in college station) for a semester and try to transfer again in the spring. I'm just curious which major might be easier to get in, then he could do an internal transfer into the college he wants to eventually graduate from. Hopefully, by doing a semester at Blinn, he can get his gpa up even higher, but I would have thought a 3.4 would be good enough to get in!!

SWTXbelle, I'm almost positive they don't have that kind of admissions policy. I think, as Heidi Klum would say, "You're either in or you're out."

Yes, it's great too for those kids who really want to be aggies, but didn't get in to A&M out of highschool. They can attend Blinn, live at Traditions or Calloway House (private dorms) with A&M students, and then transfer in when they have enough credit.

There is also a thing called "Blinn Team", which is A&M's program like UT's CAP program, where you are accepted into A&M automatically if you keep a certain gpa.

Come to think of it, East Georgia College does something like this with Georgia Southern University for kids who couldn't get into GSU right off. They can do anything at GSU except live in dorms, go Greek, or play varsity athletics. I'm all for it!

They did for high school students when I was there, not sure about transfer students though. My roommate freshman year was on probationary status pending her summer school grades.
