Great quotes that you like
I'm one of those people who always likes reading good quotes, whether they be funny, inspirational, etc...
What is one of your favorite quotes and why? I'll start, though mine is in French. "On ne voit bien qu'avec le coeur. L'important est invisible pour les yeux." It's from the book The Little Prince. "You can only truly see with your heart. The essential is invisible to the eyes." (This isn't the translation that is normally used, but most of the translations I've seen are crummy anyhow.) It was the one quote in the book that I liked when I read it the first time, but it has always stuck with me. |
I love your quote. Mine is from my mother, "Man plans and God laughs." Sort of hits the mark with being a parent.
|
I don't mean that my mother originated the quote. It is very old. The first time that I heard it was from her.

"Treat every man according to his deserts, and who shall 'scape whipping?" - Hamlet (William Shakespeare)
|
"It is good to know that the things that are meant to be, will be, in the long run."
It's from a poem called Assurance. All the lines begin with the phrase "It is good to know..." It stuck with me the first time that I read it, and ever since, it's a constant reminder. Even tonight, it brings comfort to me. |
My grandaddy used to say "If you look for something hard enough, you're going to find it whether it's there or not." He used to especially whip that one out if we were looking to find fault in someone. It's a good thing to remember.

"Education is the sleeping pill that makes dreams possible."--Peggy Hill
|
It's not really a quote, but I remember when I was about 8 or 9 my mom and dad got into a little disagreement, and after their little spat, my dad asked me this:
"Why is that some people who can't take advice always insist on giving it?" I miss my dad SO much. |
Will I sound like a total GC dork if my favorite quote is one that I learned from my Fraternity's probationary member manual? I have used it as a sig from time to time; it is attributed to Plato:
The good man is the only excellent musician, because he gives forth a perfect harmony not with a lyre or other instrument but with the whole of his life.Shakespeare provides so many quotable lines, but like SWTXBelle, I seem to be using one in particular from Hamlet a lot: There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, |
"Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise"--its from Les Miserables, I just love it because it relates a lot to the past year and a half for me.
"Though much is taken, much abides; and though We are not now that strength which in the old days Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are, One equal-temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield."- Ulysses by Alfred Lord Tennyson its just a part of it but I just love the way its written and what it means. its fabulous. |

Favorite line from that is "There is no right or wrong, but thinking makes it so." From my Dad: "Instructions are just someone else's opinion on how to do something." "The worst thing a musician can do is play notes, and not music." -Exchange student in high school. "Alright, raise you hands as high as they can go, now two inches higher...THAT IS WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOUR LIFE!" -Former Band Director "Simply because you can breathe, doesn't mean that you're alive, or that you've really lived."-Rise Against |

“Madam, you have between your legs an instrument capable of giving pleasure to thousands - and all you can do is scratch it” |
I have like a million. Here's some:
"There is something about music that keeps its distance even at the moment that it engulfs us. It is at the same time outside and away from us and inside and part of us. In one sense it dwarfs us, and in another we master it. We are led on and on, and yet in some strange way we never lose control." -Aaron Copland Favorite! "When I was in the military, they gave me a medal for killing two men and a discharge for loving one." -Leonard Matlovich "You only live once. Why miss the opportunity?" -Richie Herskowitz (1990-2007) (someone I went to high school with--means a lot to me) "Courage, it would seem, is nothing less than the power to overcome danger, misfortune, fear, injustice, while continuing to affirm inwardly that life with all its sorrows is good; that everything is meaningful even if in a sense beyond our understanding; and that there is always tomorrow." "In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life. It goes on." -Robert Frost "You were created to love and be loved. You were meant to live life in relationship with other people, to know and be known. You need to know that your story is important and that you're part of a bigger story. You need to know that your life matters." -To Write Love on Her Arms "It's the kid inside of us that keeps us from going crazy." -Zach Braff (Scrubs I think) "Straight Americans need... an education of the heart and soul. They must understand - to begin with - how it can feel to spend years denying your own deepest truths, to sit silently through classes, meals, and church services while people you love toss off remarks that brutalize your soul." -Bruce Bawer GC Nerd quote: "Your bond with Sigma Phi Epsilon is strong and never ending -- a hoop of steel. The friends thou hast and their adoption tried, grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel." |
