Hurricanes and recruitment!! AHHH

Being at a southern(ish) school in Florida (Fort Myers), its times like these I really wish my school did deferred recruitment. I get all nervous with the threat of hurricanes.

Last year, I lived with the VPM and they were saying a hurricane was going to hit in the middle of recruitment, that we would move pref to the morning of bid day then bid day would be in the afternoon. It was very tense. I would secretly turn on the weather channel because she would start having a heart attack if she heard the the word "hurricane".

Thankfully it passed us. But its a whole new year....

Any other southern schools wish for deferred recruitment?

well, i wish you all did recruitment like the majority of florida schools-before school begins!

seriously, i think the first year that recruitment at your school was held in the fall, was when charlie hit down here. we just have to make contingency plans, but it all works out in the end.

Haven't UCF and FSU had to postpone recruitment in the past due to hurricanes (like in the past 3-4 years?)

I think at one time or another most of the Florida schools have had to reschedule due to hurricanes.

We're tough. We've got it down to a science around here...!

Some day my FGCU friend.....someday. Probably not while I'm here...wah wah.

I believe you are correct about the recruitment in the fall. Fall 05 right? That was the first one with panhellenic right?

We have a tropical storm hitting just west of us, and our first day of recruitment starts tomorrow. It's like deja vu, since we had Tropical Storm Fay hit last year. Poor PNMs!

When I went through recruitment last year, recruitment was pushed a week ahead because of a hurricane :/. It was only a three day recruitment instead of the usual four day. And the PNMs did not have the full "recruitment experiences" (what i was told by one of my sisters). But I'm really hope that when recruitment begins there would be no threats of hurricanes.

The year Sigma Delta Tau colonized at FSU, they had to delay events due to to hurricanes.

It's raining here in Tallahassee today - the PNMs are going to have a damp day!

I believe Charlie was Friday, August 13, 2004.

chickennoodle, you are correct. I live in southwest florida too and I missed 2 weeks of school my freshman year of high school for charlie, so I definately remember the year.

Charlie rampaged through my hometown 5 years ago, and it's amazing the impact the hurricane has had on the area so many years later.

Why do FL schools hold recruitment before fall anyways? My initial thought was some FL recruitments were so competitive that a fall recruitment would allow for spring COB. But... this is just a PNM's musings though I am curious as to why they hold recruitment during the peak of hurricane season.

Peak season is usually September for hurricanes. It seems that most hurricanes have hit Florida in Sept. and some in October. In Florida, you just have to plan for rain in August and expect muggy weather. It does not make for great recruitment conditions, but everyone seems to get through.

I actually like recruitment before the semester starts. It allows the young ladies to really focus on it without having to worry about their classes as well. It may not be perfect, but it works.
